Adeline POV
"Line. You're done." Sophia Smith tapped my shoulders and I picked up my phone. Opening up the camera, I smiled at my hair. It was in a braid with a piece of grey prewrap holding my loose hairs back.
"Thanks Soph." Sophia nods and sits back in her seat. I direct my attention back out the window, watching the passing light posts.
"You nervous?" Her whisper breaks me out of my trance. Turning towards her I shrug.
"I'm always a little nervous." I giggle and she smiles at me. She leans her head on my shoulder and I lean my head on top of hers.
Sophia and I have been best friends since I can remember. I met her at Stanford, where she graduated a year earlier. Now I have to conquer senior year alone and online. But, these camps and games over seas help. I get to see my second family, which ultimately distracts me from my very busy life.
I tap my foot against the bud floor, matching the beat of the music that flowed from my AirPods.
A little nudge made me pause my music. I removed my AirPods and put them into their respective case. I knew we arrived at the stadium and when all the girls started moving, I decided to get up.
I followed Sophia down the aisle but a little tug on my braid stopped me. I turned and saw Alex, Kelley, Christen, and Sonnet watching me.
I nibbled on my bottom lip waiting for them to talk.
"You look cute Adeline." Kelley teased and I rolled my eyes. "Especially in the new video the US Soccer channel posted."
"We saw you dancing." Sonnet teased again and I turned around, exiting the bus.
"Leave her alone girls. We can talk about how cute the dancing video was later." Alex said and I turned shooting a smile to Alex.
I walked down the pathway as Vlatko led us into the locker room. I made my way to my locker and set down my stuff. I looked to my left and saw Mal slipping on her training gear. I reached for my necklace, realizing it wasn't there sent my heart to the floor.
Turning to my right, Becky was emerged in a conversation with Kelley and Lindsey. I panicked a little, searching the ground.
"Looking for something?" Sophia sets my necklace in front of me. I let out a breath of air and grabbed the necklace tightly.
"Thank you. Thank you. Thank you." I wrapped my arms around Sophia's neck. "You're the best!"
"I know..." Sophia was looking down and as she looked up, a glimmer I'd never seen in her eyes before.
I set it in my necklace in my locker, and pulled my shirt over my head.
"I'll go." Sophia said quickly and walked away. I got changed, slipped on my warm up gear. I grabbed my cleats and unlaced them. I put them on, tying them tightly. Jumping up, I made my way towards the field keeping my focus on the game.
I was nervous due to Vlatko telling me I'd probably starting today. I've started before, only once and I played great that game. Just because I played good one game doesn't mean the others will be good.
The team started the warm up and my butterflies got more and more aggravating. Deciding to pull myself to together and get rid of these nerves, I ran over to the bench and saw a trash can. I walked over and forced myself to throw up. I'd been doing this for years and it was just easy at this point.
I wiped my mouth and jogged back over to the team. Some of them were giving me glances, knowing what I did was unhealthy but I ignored them.
As we neared game time, we made our way back to the locker rooms. I was getting changed into my uniform when Alex approached me.
