chapter seven; halloween

( October '71 )

It had been two weeks since Brooklyn's letter was torn to shreds by Evanna Ross. Ever since then, she's been bullied by Evanna and her friends. They were all two years older. Brooklyn's spent most of her time outside the classroom in either her dorm or a broom closet where nobody would find her.

She kept crying and crying when she's alone. You don't know how many times she's been called worthless or a nobody. Jack was almost always there to try convince her that she wasn't worthless or a nobody, but she wouldn't listen. She actually believed that she was worthless and a nobody.

Today was Halloween and it was rainy and cold outside. Students were forced to stay inside because of the amounts of rain pouring down onto the grounds. Inside the castle it was pretty cold causing most of the girls to put leggings underneath their skirts.

Brooklyn was spending her and James's favorite holiday all alone. Halloween was their favorite because of all the scary props they could use to scare their parents. They loved scaring their parents. They had made a plan when they went to Hogwarts together that they would scare the Headmaster and the teachers.

Brooklyn ran across the courtyard, shielding herself from getting wet with a book. She ran to the other side of the courtyard that connected to a hallway which led her to her Potion's classroom. Brooklyn made it to the other side of the courtyard, soaking wet from the rain.

Brooklyn was taking an extra Potions class since it was offered to her and a couple of other students.

Meanwhile, James and Sirius were getting ready for school. They woke up late, like usual.

"Wait we have McGonagall, she's going to give us detention!" exclaimed James.

Sirius and James rushed down the stairs, seeing Remus on the couch in the common room.

"You're skipping?" asked Sirius, breathing heavy.

"No, do you think I'm that stupid? Plus it's a Sunday!" said Remus.

"Wait, did you say it's a Sunday?" asked James.

"Yes I did," said Remus, grinning.

Sirius slapped his forehead. Today they didn't have classes, yet they thought they did.

"So you're telling me we got up in a rush because we thought we were late for McGonagall, and we worried for nothing?" asked James.

"Yes," answered Remus smiling slightly.

Sirius and James looked at each other, and flopped down on the couch.

"Why'd we forget?" asked Sirius.

"I don't know," said James shaking his head. "Wait today's Halloween! I'll be back."

James rushed off to his dorm and quickly wrote a letter to Brooklyn. He sent it off using Remus's owl. He walked back downstairs where Remus and Sirius were waiting for him. Lily Evans walked down the stairs and sat near the fireplace.

"Oy, Evans!" shouted James.

"What, Potter?" asked Lily.

"Would you do a Halloween prank with us?" James asked.

"No," said Lily.

"Please?" said James.

He gave his famous puppy dog eyes. His puppy dog eyes make anyone give into him, but Lily simply didn't pay attention. She had already opened her book and started reading Alice in Wonderland. James walked back over to Remus and Sirius with his head down.

"She'll come around one day, mate!" said Sirius, clapping James on the back.

Brooklyn walked back to the OmbreLune common room after her special Potions class. She had learned about Amortentia. She didn't get to make it until fourth year, but she still learned about it. It was very interesting to Brooklyn. She always wondered a lot about Love Potions and it's effects on people.

She bumped into a hard yet warm surface. She backed away from the surface, knowing that it was a person. It was just Jack.

"I've been looking for you," said Jack.

"You have?" asked Brooklyn.

"I lost you after Potions class," started Jack. "I was worried about you."

"I'm fine. Are we going to carve pumpkins in the common room?" inquired Brooklyn.

"Yes!" said Jack as they started walking. "It's a Muggle tradition, did you know? They carve pumpkins and put candles in them."

"I remember my mom and dad talking about it once," answered Brooklyn. "Halloween is James and I's favorite holiday. James is my brother, my twin brother actually. We loved scaring people so that's why Halloween became our favorite holiday. We spent every Halloween together scaring people. We never went trick or treating."

"I've never went trick or treating either," said Jack. "I've always stayed inside watching scary Muggle Films. Some of them are really scary while others are not scary at all."

Brooklyn and Jack made it back to the OmbreLune common room where there was pumpkin carving being done.

"Miss Potter and Mr. Ross would you like to carve a pumpkin?" asked Professor Bubbly.

"Yes please," answered Brooklyn and Jack at the same time.

They sat down next to each other and started to carve their pumpkins. They talked about things they did usually did for Halloween. Whenever Brooklyn would mention James, she would get teary eyed.

Jack managed to cheer her up by suggesting a pumpkin carving contest. Jack started to carve the Castle of Beauxbatons while Brooklyn was carving out the Castle of Hogwarts. Both of their pumpkins were beautiful when the two were done with them.

The two had asked Professor Bubbly who's was better and she said that Jack's was better. Brooklyn thought that Professor Bubbly was only choosing Jack's because it was the Castle of Beauxbatons.
