THE COLD DUCHESS
It had been a month since the incident, and Obi-Wan had spent every night with me since then. And afternoons and mornings. And every moment we could spare from our individual obligations.
Strangely enough, Obi-Wan and I have been assigned together on more missions than expected since my brush with death. Well, Obi-Wan and I, as well as Anakin and me. If I wasn't on an assignment with one, I was likely on an assignment with the other.
I certainly wasn't complaining, but I didn't really understand why, and so far, I have only two guesses. Either the Council was keeping an eye on me after my brush with death and expected Obi-Wan and Anakin to do the best with it. Or they were growing suspicious after all the events unfolded and waiting for one of the three of us to slip up.
I was hoping it was the first one. And for the time being, I dropped all complaints to the Council about not having a Padawan. After all, a Padawan would only take up all the time I currently have with Obi-Wan.
This past month was one of the happiest I can ever even remember being. I didn't want to lose that feeling because of a careless slip-up with our attachments.
Then we were called to a mission together, and it was the first time in a while I'd seen Obi-Wan so tense.
The pair of us were dispatched when rumors spread that the leader on this planet was building an army to fight for the Separatists. This is the same planet Embry had been assigned to months ago to guard their leader. A terrorist attack on a Jedi Cruiser by a man wearing armor from this planet forces the Jedi Council to send both of us. Obi-Wan apparently already knew the leader, who we were told was also the new leader of the Neutral Systems Council, while I was sent because of my history with Embry.
I fly us in on our two-seater ship, trying to lighten the mood with the tense atmosphere coming from the back. "I'm excited to see Embry again," I exclaim.
"We have a job to do, Serenity," Obi-Wan only lectures in response.
I roll my eyes. "Oh, lighten up."
Perhaps it was just Anakin's cooking leaving him all weird. Anakin can't cook for shit, that's for sure.
We flew through countless desserts across the planet before arriving at the coordinates Obi-Wan gave me to the domed capital city, Sundari. The city was an enclosed bio-dome that allowed it to exist on the otherwise harsh planet. I carefully guided our ship down to the landing dock within the bi-domed city.
