THE DROID, THE JEDI, AND THE SENATOR
Every time I'm summoned before the Council, it's like a constant game of guessing if I'm being called forth for something I did or someone else did. The worst part is that I never actually know until I get there.
Although the Republic has been locked into a constant battle with the Separatist battleship Malevolence, and a Republic strike force was recently sent out to disable the battleship, I hope this is a sign that the summons wasn't against me. Even better, maybe they finally had an answer to my request for a Padawan learner.
The Council started the discussion by reminding me that Anakin and Obi-Wan have been relentlessly pursuing Malevolence. "While we know you are fully capable of fighting, we are going to have you return to protecting Senator Padmé," Master Ki-Adi-Mundi informed me. My eyebrows raised slightly in surprise, but my lips curled in a small smile at the news. Working with Padmé again was always exciting, not to mention a much-needed break from the never-ending fighting of late.
"The Chancellor requested that Padmé head negotiations with the InterGalactic Banking Clan Supreme Executive, and Padmé then personally requested that you accompany her," Master Windu continued.
"It would be my pleasure," I answered humbly, trying to contain my smile. I will find the Senator immediately," I said, bowing to them in farewell.
"May the Force be with you," Master Windu tells me upon my departure.
I start to leave before pausing at the door. "Council," I humbly ask, returning to face the room. "I put in a request a few months ago for a Padawan learner during my mission on Christophsis. I still haven't heard back on a decision."
"We are still reviewing your request," Master Kit Fisto, a green-skinned Nautolan like Tito, tells me plainly. Yet vaguely.
I tell myself to bite my tongue, but the words still slip out. "With all due respect, you have had plenty of time to review my request." They've been sitting without an answer for me for months now. Everyone knows Padawan paperwork takes maybe a week at most. They were stalling, and I wanted to know why. "Anakin received a Padawan without even applying and may still not even be ready for one."
It's not that I was jealous of my twin. I just honestly didn't understand. Anakin only repeatedly said over the years that he would never want a Padawan. Yet the Council decided that someone who showed no interest in one deserves the chance, while they kept overlooking me when I was more than willing to teach someone from the next generation.
Frankly, it makes zero sense.
"Faith in your brother, you must have," Master Yoda instructs. "Ready, he is, to teach an apprentice."
