TEMPTATIONS OF THE PAST

"So, how's this Duchess?" Anakin asks casually, with all of us crammed into a lift with Commander Cody and Captain Rex.

"I don't like her," I state bluntly, not caring who is in the lift to hear.

"Serenity," Obi-Wan says with warning.

"That bad?" Anakin raises his eyebrows.

"She's a bitch."

"She is not," Embry cuts in to the Duchess defense.

"Oh, come on, she hates me," I remind Embry. "Ever since we arrived here, she's done nothing but glare at me and snap on me."

"Okay, she does seem like it with you," Embry admits. "But that doesn't make her a bitch."

"She's had a horrible day," Obi-Wan also backs the Duchess up.

"Just wait. You can decide for yourself," I tell Anakin.

The lift falls awkwardly silent. Embry is likely silent due to my growing animosity toward her boss. Obi-Wan, likely because of his own muddled now quickly becoming his secret past. Then Anakin, Cody, and Rex all likely wondering what they did to deserve getting stuck with this.

I can feel Obi-Wan's eyes lingering on me, but I don't bother glancing his way. His secret past starting to eat at me.

"I sense some anxiety from you about the Duchess," Anakin speaks through the silence. I turn to face him but find his attention is not directed toward me, but Obi-Wan, who is stroking his beard, lost in thought. "She couldn't be in safer hands with all four of us."

"Yes, I know," Obi-Wan answers quickly.

Too quick.

"Then why . . .," Anakin starts to ask slowly before he is shut down.

"Never mind," Obi-Wan states definitively. "It's all in the past," he says vaguely.

"So, you keep saying," I muttered, crossing my arms while he looked helplessly at me.

"Oh, so you're close to her?" Embry asks.

"I knew her," Obi-Wan snaps, starting to become defensive. "A long time ago."

"Did you know any of this?" Anakin turns to me.

I slowly reply. "No, not when I should have." I turn to Obi-Wan, not even bothering to hide my disapproval. "You should have disclosed that to us from the beginning, seeing as that's kind of important."
