"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose" Lauren sang softly as put the sugar cookie dough on the pan.

It was only four hours ago she was dropped off and she decided to decorate the whole house for Christmas. After all, it was the sixteenth and her grandparents didn't even bother to take out any of the decorations. So she just decided to do it by herself.

She kept singing softly as she took out the chocolate chip cookies and replaced them with sugar cookies in the oven. She closed the oven door and washed her hands.

She now had three different types of cookies made snickerdoodle, double chocolate, chocolate chip, and sugar cookies being baked. She also had Christmas crack.

She cleaned up the mess of flour, sugar, butter, eggs and everything else that was needed to make the cookies. She washed the dishes and put them away. Checking the timer she had four minutes until she can take them out.

She went to the almost done Christmas tree and continued to finish putting the ornaments on until the timer went off.

She took the sugar cookies out of the oven and turned off the oven. She let them cool before putting them into a box with the other cookies. She smiled softly to herself proud that she was able to make four different types of cookies within two hours.

Her phone went off and she checked her messages. Her smile soon turned into a thin line of annoyance. She read the rest of the message and became even more annoyed. The message was from her father saying that she was invited to his wedding in June.

"Salaud" she said under her breath.

She was going to say she wouldn't be going but the moment she started typing there was a knock on the door. She sighed and went over to open it, coming face to face with Ashley, Beau, and Kasen who was behind the two siblings on his phone.

"What ever you want, it's a no." She said attempting to close the door.

Ashley's arm stuck out and kept it open. "We're supposed to be giving out flyers for the Christmas dance that will take place on Christmas in town hall. And were hoping to see you there."

Lauren took the flyer and looked at it. "I'm busy on Christmas." She lied

"What are you bus with?" Ashley asked.

"Self pity and drowning in my thoughts." She responded with a monotone voice.

"And I thought Kasen was antisocial." Ashley muttered under breath. "Just please show up okay? Just for like thirty seconds. Also there are small competitions like who has the best dress. Or who can dance the best. It's really fun!" She said in a pleading voice.

        "No."

"Don't you design?" Kasen asked without taking his eyes off his phone, Lauren nodded. "Make some dresses then charge people for them think of it as being a mini fashion designer."

Lauren thought about it. She liked his idea, getting money and designing. It seemed fun, "alright I'll think about it."

"Okay great bye!" Ashley said and dragged the two boys with her the next house.

She closed the door and looked at the flyer again. She left the flyer on the kitchen counter and kept working on the tree.

     ———

Lauren looked around her grandparents now Christmas decorated house. She smiled. She knew they would be shocked, after all she never even talked to them often. So she thought they might appreciate her act of kindness.

Lauren decided to call her grandparents to know when they will get home. She called her grandmother and waited for her to pick up the phone.

"Hello?" She heard her grandmother's voice n the other end.

"Hey grandmother, when do you think you'll be home?" She asked.

"Oh by the eighteenth why?"

"Just wondering."

"Okay, also did we get invited to the Christmas dance?"

"Uh yes."

"Okay good. Everyone in the town us going so you are too! I recommend buying a dress from another town because we don't have good designers out here. Of course you can make your own if you wish." Her grandmother said.

Lauren sighed "okay, I'll see you on the eighteenth."

"Bye sweetie!" Her grandmother said in a chirpy voice.

Lauren grabbed the flyer and dragged herself up stairs into her room. She got out her sketch book and looked at inspirations or her dress on Pinterest. She scrolled through beautiful dresses made by other designers.

An idea quickly came into her head and she started to work on the skirt first. Long and easy to move in, but not a big skirt. Something that goes down and not up. And a top that would cover her chest.

Lauren looked at her sketch idea and nodded her head. She looked at the time and saw it was eight fifty-five. "Well it's time to start." She muttered to her self as she got the fabric for she wanted for the top of the dress.
