"You know if looks could kill, you would have killed that poor ball." Daeun tried to joke, even more concerned when she didn't get a reaction.
"Your jokes aren't helping, Hon." Doyoung pointed out.
"Obviously. She's been out of it since yesterday." Daeun sighed, leaning on Doyoung. "She didn't even accept the crushed ice Sicheng offered her. It's her favorite kind of ice to chew on!"
"I thought she liked it better as ice cubes." Doyoung shrugged.
"Are you a fake friend or did you forget about how Seul almost choked that one time?" She reminded.
"I mean like the reasonable sized ice cubes!"
"Don't talk like I'm not here. I'm seriously not in the mood." Iseul finally spoke. She dragged herself along, trying to keep up with the team. The frequent buzzing around her made her groan in annoyance. "These fucking mosquitos will be the end of me."
"Did you and Yuta fight?" Daeun asked. "How will he play in the practice match if you're both not okay?"
"They're not even together? Hello?" Doyoung reminded.
"But they're friends." Daeun shut down.
"We never really acknowledged if we're friends or not." Iseul quietly piped in. "We're just bound by the contract."
"Excuse me?" Daeun scoffed. "Haneul and Jaemin weren't 'friends' but look at them now!"
"I practice the art of assuming we are acquaintances because not everyone is your friend." Iseul defended. "I mean, we all experienced it firsthand."
"Are you trying to tell the whole team? Keep your voice down!" Doyoung hushed, pinching Daeun's cheeks. "You deny you're friends, but you don't deny you guys fought?"
"I wouldn't say fight, but I can tell you it was completely my fault." Iseul mumbled, voice getting quieter with each word. Her eyes easily land on him. He was the easiest to spot with his crimson locks.
Maybe she shouldn't have snapped at him. Maybe he could have helped her.
"Ah, why did we have to arrive at the worst time?" Daeun whined. "Spill the tea later, and whatever you did and it really was your fault, apologize."
Iseul spotted a couple of people on the vast field warming up. She recognized a couple of them while the others were completely new faces.
"Iseul! Daeun!" A familiar voice called. "When did you two get so pretty?"
"Excuse me, Bonsai, but I have been pretty from the start." Daeun sassed. "I even got myself a man."
"Unfortunately." Doyoung jokingly sighed. He let out a cry of pain when Daeun pinched his arm. "Woman that hurts."
"I see Daeun is lively as ever." Sai chuckled. He turned to Iseul. "How are you and Jungwoo?"
"Attention Neos! This is Choi Sai, the manager of JYPU's soccer team and a long time friend of mine. He's the one who made this camp possible." Iseul announced, ignoring his last statement. The boys lined up to bow, greeting him in chorus.
"Alright, let's all have a fun and safe training camp!"
☁
"Taeyong needs to work on his passing, Jaehyun needs to stop hogging the ball, Sungchan needs to work on his aim. Johnny improved in goal keeping so his practice regimen is okay." Iseul noted everything she could observe.
"You two broke up, huh." Sai brought up, passing her a bottle of water. "Plants need water to grow tall, although, it seems too late for you."
She rolled her eyes and went back to writing. "Shut it, Bonsai. You should focus on your own team."
"I'm not the only bonsai here, shorty." Sai reminded, pointing to her. "You know, I always warned you about Jungwoo. Looks like I was right. He always gave me the creeps."
"I never listen anyway." Iseul added to the roast. As angry as she was with Jungwoo, she still felt that soft spot she tried so hard to get rid of. It was difficult to remove something with roots too deep into her.
"So Daeun told me you're dating someone else." Sai continued. "Who's the unfortunate boy?"
Rule Number 3, Besides Daeun and Doyoung, no one else can know about the contract.
"You see that guy with red hair?" Iseul used her pen to point to Yuta. Her eyes linger a little longer on him, the words she said yesterday poking at her conscience.
She didn't have any right to lash out on him yesterday, but her feelings got the best of her. She needed to apologize to him. He only meant well.
"Damn sis." Sai whistled. "He looks like a good person."
"He is." She mumbled. Her heart turned in guilt as her eyes lingered on him. "He really is a good person."
☁
"Ah, it looks like it might rain tomorrow." Donghyuck sighed. "Iseul hates rain."
"I like it. It's really relaxing." Sungchan disagreed.
"Now that I think of it, Yuta doesn't like the rain either. Man, they really are meant to be." Mark realized, feeling somewhat proud of himself.
"Eh, I've always been rooting for you and Yuta." Donghyuck teased.
"Dongs and friends!" Iseul called. "Dinner is almost ready. We'll be eating with the other team."
"Alright. We'll go after we drop our clothes to our rooms."
"Have you guys seen Yuta? I've been looking for him everywhere." She asked. It was like the boy disappeared after their practice ended. They both shared a room, but he was never there even when it was time to sleep.
"Not sure. Last time I saw him was on the field." Mark recounted. "He'll come eventually. He likes to have his secret time."
Iseul muttered a quick thanks before continuing her search. She must have been to every room and corner in the cottage and still couldn't find him.
Did he turn invisible or something?
She sat on the steps of the porch, resting her aching feet. She looked up to the night sky with a sigh.
She needed to apologize to him.
"What are you doing out here?" Yuta asked. He stood a couple of feet away from her, a plastic bag hanging from his curled fingers. He pulled a pack of Pororo mosquito repellent patches and tossed it in her direction. She nearly dropped it but caught it nonetheless.
"Where did you go? I've been looking for you." Iseul nagged.
"Taeyong told me to buy some eggs for the egg drop soup." Yuta mumbled. "Were you perhaps bothered by my absence?"
"Not really." She hesitantly answered. "Daeun said you weren't in the dining so I decided to look for you."
"I see." Yuta walked past her, only to stop with a tug at his hoodie. "What?"
"About yesterday... I um."
"If you really loved me you would have trusted me. I can't believe you, Seul."
Why can't I say anything? Why am I remembering these things?
"You made a great point yesterday. I'm just an outsider, and the only reason why we're talking is because we're taking advantage of each other." Yuta started. He looked back with a smile, but his eyes showed something different. "I'll stop bugging you outside of our contract."
"That's not...what I mean." Her voice came out as defeated, watching him walk away.
