Phoebe
Thanks to my sweet, crazy, conflict-avoiding girlfriend, the entire ride to the mountains of Nevada I spent beyond nervous. We pulled to a beautiful cottage and my skin grew hot and my heart pounded in my ears.
"Ready?" Win asked. I laughed sarcastically.
"Do I look ready?" She shook her head and kissed me.
When we stepped out of the car her family came pouring down the stairs. Their home was truly beautiful and unique and I couldn't stop admiring the sleekness of the modern cottage. Her dad, mom, and Trice who I've met Via Skype all walked to the car. They exchange hugs with Win and eyed me curiously. Her mom was beautiful and youthful, her skin paler than Win's but her father is who she clearly got her eyes from.
"Mom, dad," she stepped closer to me, clasping my hand. "This is Phoebe, she's my girlfriend." I could have died. Their faces froze and their smiles faded.
"Girlfriend?" Her mom repeated, mortified. She looked from her to me and back to our hands.
"Hi, Mrs. Moreau, Mr. Moreau, it's a lovely home you have here." It was the best I could do, I'd never been the 'meet-the-parents' kinda girlfriend. In fact, Win's parents were the only parents of any of my girlfriends or boyfriends that I'd been introduced to. They finally shook my hand once the initial shock passed and we headed inside. It was so clean and homey, with beautiful curves and arches. "Wow, this is so pretty."
"Thank you, my wife has a good eye." Jack replied, making me smile. Maybe they didn't hate me. Or at least he didn't.
"Hi, I'm sure you remember me." Trice was an attractive ginger with blazing green eyes and tall like me.
"Yes, Trice. It's nice to finally meet you." She looked me over and smiled, like she approved.
"Yeah, you too." Eliza, Wins mom, handed me a water with the stiffest smile I'd ever received.
"Thank you so much, I'm parched." I said politely, accepting her hospitable gesture.
"So, how long have you and my daughter been dating?" She wondered once we all sat down in the living room in front of the wide panoramic windows. She said dating like it was a foreign word.
"Momma, don't start with the interrogation." Win told her. She sat beside me, holding my hand.
"It's just a question sweetheart." I smiled to make it less awkward. When she asked me more questions about my life growing up and my job the conversation became easier. They were getting to know me and that's all I could really ask for. I wanted them to like me. Winter and I headed upstairs to the master bedroom to unpack while her mom and Trice made dinner.
"Do you think I passed the interrogation?" I asked her while we lounged in bed.
"With flying colors, but I didn't doubt you for a second." She rolled on top of me and kissed my lips teasingly slow. "It doesn't matter what they think, remember, I love you and nothing's going to change that." She trailed my lips with her tongue before I stuck mine out and licked her. She found my sides and the simple touch tickled me. I giggled.
"I'm ticklish, Love." She laughed, dominating my mouth and kissing me desperately. The door opened and someone yelped.
"Shit, my mom." She jumped up and chased after her. I sighed, laying on the bed staring at the fan above.
Dinner was a feast, with all the perfect fixings.
"One of the reasons I fell for Phoebe was because of the way she cooked, she's amazing." I blushed at her raving compliment and noticed her mother shifted uncomfortably. Winter kissed my cheek and I flushed even more.
"Have you talked to Kaiden, dear?" Her mother asked, making it awkward again. She was obviously having a hard time adjusting to her daughter coming out. It was something she could get past because I'd eventually wear her down, I had no doubts she'd come around to me and Winter. Especially because I knew she loved her enough to do so.
"No, mom, I haven't. I won't. You know that's over, I'm with Phoebe now." Winter explained, holding my hand closely for support.
"Sweetie, I'm just so confused. Since when are you gay?" Winter became agitated, and I calmed her down by rubbing her palm soothingly.
"Since I screwed Bee in her bed about a million times." She retorted. I nudged her and was filled with embarrassment. Her mother scoffed and shook her head disapprovingly.
"Jesus! Don't talk like that. I know my daughter, and I know you've never liked women. Kaiden and you were supposed to marry, what happened?" Her mother was pushing the wrong buttons. Winter was a grown women, I didn't understand how she could try and force her to be with someone she didn't want to be with.
"Jesus, ma! I cheated on him, okay? With Bee. I fell in love with her 3 days after moving. Kaiden wants nothing to do with me, and that's okay." Eliza was shocked, tears even weld up in her eyes.
"So, what? She's just a fling then?" Winter stood swiftly, her chair scraping against the floor making a horrible high-pitched sound.
"I don't need this! You can think whatever it is you want but I love someone more than I ever have before and that's enough for me. By the way, we're getting married. We just thought it respectful to ask that you be there, but if I'm so disgusting to you? Don't bother." She ushered me up and we left.
She was jumping and laughing and I'd never seen her like it. She raced through the slick streets like she was on crack.
"Slow down there, Love, before you crash." I told her. She listened and eased off the peddle.
"Do you know how freeing that felt? I've never told my parents off like that, it felt good!" I laughed.
"Good for you." She smiled and pulled the car over in a nearly deserted street, rain suddenly poured down and smacked the metal and windows of the car like pellets. She dug in a bag on the back seat and pulled out a little black box. I'd proposed to her on a random night after mind-blowing sex and she didn't even hesitate with her answer.
"I love you, more than anything. And I never want to be away from you. Will you marry me?" She opened the box and revealed a stunning black oval cut diamond. I'd never seen a more beautiful ring in my life. Tears weld and stung my eyes and I couldn't hold them in. I nodded.
"Yes, of course! It's beautiful." She slid the ring on my finger and I admired it, it was perfect for me. I laughed with glee, kissing her repeatedly. "I love you, and we had the same idea." I pulled out my coat and retrieved my own little black box from the pocket. Inside was a rose gold square cut diamond ring. She gasped, and I slid it on her dainty pink polished finger. Just then her mother texted her, pleading for her to come back and have a rational discussion. Then she apologized.
"I love you." She cried, kissing me desperately.
"Maybe as much I do, Love. But I don't think it's possible." A romantic fairytale I never expected to have and it all started with a note.
THE END 🌈💜💚💛
