Winter
Kaiden was getting ready when I woke up. He came in late the night before and I didn't see him or feel him when he climbed into bed. He looked hot going to work in his charcoal black suit and shiny blue tie that matched his eyes.
After Phoebe left for work I spent my day finishing what little I had to unpack. I broke down boxes, tossed them out, then rearranged my furniture perfectly. Around 2:30pm Kaiden called. It was his lunch break.
"Hey, babe." He chirped, more chipper than usual.
"You must be having a good day." I said.
"I am, always am." I laughed.
"So, the neighbor girl, Phoebe, invited me out with her tonight I was thinking I'd go." A light sigh left him.
"Oh, babe, wish you'd have told me sooner, I have an event tonight and I was going to surprise you. I wanted to make it a date night." My heart warmed, but I was a bit torn. I'd been to a dozen different events with Kaiden, but the last time I went out to a bar was shortly after my 21st birthday. Trice was never into it, she just loved hanging out with me at my parents house.
"Okay, sounds good. I'll cancel my plans."
"Perfect. I have a dress being delivered to you as well. It should be there a bit later."
"Okay."
My dress did indeed arrive 45 minutes after we ended our conversation. It was a white Bardot detailed dress with only one sleeve and a slanted hemline both ruffled subtly. It was beautiful, of course, Kaiden had taste. I really hoped this event was better than the lasts. They've all just been a bunch of grumpy old men and their trophy wives flaunting their money and expensive accessories, making their lives seem better than it is. The men acted as if they were head over heels in love with their wives although they cheated very often. I wondered if that's what Kaiden and I would look like 10 or 20 years from now, if that is what I had to look forward to. Staying home all day every day by myself and then attending gala's and events with my husband when he needed to put up the perfect front. Maybe kids were in our future, we talked about it often when we were in college but since it's been hard having such conversations.
I hung up the plastic wrapped dress in my closet and set for a shower. I needed to go grocery shopping as well as get my hair, nails, and face done. I lathered lotion on my body and sprayed some scented mist before dressing in jean shorts and a white tank top. After deodorant, I brushed through my hair, my teeth, and some face moisturizer. After slipping into some sandals I headed out.
My first stop was Walmart. It took me a little over an hour to grab everything but I made it out without breaking a sweat. Before heading to the salon I stopped at the apartment to drop off the groceries and immediately headed back out. Since I didn't book an appointment I wasn't sure how long it'd take at the salon.
I matched my nails and toes with my dress and she did my hair in an elegant updo. I tipped her generously and raced home to finish getting ready.
"I sent a driver for you, he'll be there in an hour, be ready, Babe. He's swinging to pick me up after and we'll head straight there." Kaiden instructed lamely, possibly busying himself with something.
"Okay, I'll be ready."
After dressing and slipping on heels I grabbed my clutch and headed towards to elevator. I impatiently pressed the down button and scurried inside when the doors opened.
"Hold it!" A sweet but strong voice exclaimed, placing their black manicured hand on the door, holding it open. I caught her black hair and hat before anything else and my heart raced because we'd never actually spoken verbally before. I bit into my lip as she stepped on with me.
"Hey!" Her voice was slightly raspy and had a sweet edge to it I liked. Her eyes took me in rather greedily, taking their time eyeing me up close. "Wow, you look so beautiful." I blushed.
"Thank you," I replied bashfully. I let my eyes fall along her frame. She wore a black mini dress that complimented her long elegant tanned legs, and the straps were thin and the neckline plunging, exposing the slopes of her cleavage. The elevator doors closed. "I'm sorry about bailing on you-" she waved her hand through the air.
"No, no worries. I hope you have a good night with your fiancé." Her lips were full, with a deep cute Cupid's bow, and painted deep blood red. Her long lashes batted sweetly.
"I hope you have fun tonight, too." She gave me a certain look that made her azure eyes twinkle, I couldn't decipher it but I enjoyed the curve of her lips as she gazed at me. Something was hidden behind that slight smile but I had no time to figure it out because the doors had opened.
"After you," she said softly. Almost alluringly.
The driver arrived promptly at 8pm. He was an older gentlemen with silver hair and cloudy blue eyes.
"Ms. Moreau, I'm Jack, I'll be your driver for the night." He greeted professionally. I gave him a nod and a smile.
"Hi, Jack, please, call me Winter."
Smiling stiffly he said, "of course. You look lovely, I hope you have a delightful time." I patted his shoulder before gliding into the limo.
"Thank you." The ride to Kaidens office was about 40 minutes and when we finally arrived I peered up at the towering skyscraper. Jack was out and holding the door in mere seconds as Kaiden exited the building looking like a king. I couldn't help my smile as I admired him.
"Wow," he said, looking at me up and down shamelessly. "You look amazing." He kissed my cheek and unlocked his phone.
"So do you, babe. Did you have a good day?" It took him a moment to register me speaking but when he did he tucked his phone away, giving me his undivided attention.
"I did. What about you? What'd you do today?" His arm swung over the headrest of my seat and I scooted closer to him. I wanted to tell him I was bored out of my mind. Sitting in a house all alone with nothing to do but clean was really taking it's toll. In Nevada I was a nanny. And a store clerk. I'd have to make it priority to get in touch with the families I worked for. I missed all my kids.
"I just blogged a bit, cleaned, and ran errands. We have food now." He chuckled and it made me smile.
"Good."
