I grew up in Brooklyn, New York with my brother, Bucky Barnes, and his best friend, Steve Rogers. We were just three orphans aiming to serve our country against Hitler in the 1940s. Though, Bucky was the only one who qualified to be enlisted in World War 2. Steve suffered from illnesses that kept him unfit to serve and I was barely considered a young woman. I was seventeen, but I could keep up a good fight. While Bucky was a lady's man, I was the troublemaker. That was probably the reason why I only had one boyfriend in high school, and for the fact, I was in love with my brother's best friend. Even before he had taken the super-soldier serum and became Captain America. But, he had only ever seen me as Bucky's little sister who is six years younger.
After the scare of Bucky being dead, I was finally enlisted with the help of Howard Stark and Peggy Carter. They had met me through Steve and saw something in me. Though, I wasn't there when my brother fell from the train and was declared dead. But I was able to say goodbye to Steve before he went into the ice of the Atlantic Ocean.
I had no hope after. I was twenty-one when he "died" and college was far from my mind. I had lost the last two people I ever loved and suddenly being a soldier was the only thing I was living for. Peggy had come to me with an offer. She told me that there was another super-soldier serum that Erskine had kept safe and I could become the world's next superhero. But, with the exception of being preserved frozen and let out only for missions for so on out. I instantly agreed with nothing holding me back. I became Agent Barnes of S.H.I.E.L.D.
I was let out for the thirteenth time from my frozen state surprised to learn that my long-life crush was alive and had woken up from a similar state as me. I was supposed to ease the first super-soldier into waking up in a different century. That night at a Brooklyn bar hadn't gone well as he immediately went into hibernation the next day. I was sent back to Fury and told I wasn't going to be kept frozen anymore. He told me it was time to continue training with other agents like me until my next mission. Those two agents were Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton. This happens to be the reason why I am where I am now waiting for instructions from Nick Fury himself.
"All personnel, the evacuation order has been confirmed," I hear over the intercom at my work base. "This is not a drill."
I thank God as I am already in my uniform, comprising of black pants, a black long-sleeve shirt, and a belt carrying a gun and my favorite two knives. I run past the other agents and workers as I go to where Agent Coulson is waiting for Fury and Agent Hill to get out of his helicopter.
"You're late," Agent Coulson says to me.
"I'm never late," I hastily put my long, naturally slightly curled, dark-brown hair into a ponytail.
"How bad is it?" Fury asks us after walking up to us with his all-black fleece jacket, boots, and patch that covers his left eye.
"That's the issue," I begin.
"We don't know," Agent Coulson finishes. We walk through one of the buildings as he continues to explain, "Dr. Selvig read an energy surge from the Tesseract four hours ago."
"NASA didn't authorize Selvig to go to the test phase," Fury points out to us.
"He wasn't testing it, sir," I say. "He wasn't even in the room."
