Chapter 20
Detective Langley stood up so fast his chair was knocked backwards.
"You can't be serious!" he boomed, "you can't sit there, calling yourself a detective, and tell me the case is closed."
Berge was clearly not impressed with Langley's behaviour be he didn't care.
"Sit down, detective," Berge said in a patronising tone.
"No, I'm going to do some police work," he said, shaking his head, "cause that's what we do as police officers, we do police work."
As he left, he grabbed a folder off his desk. He was fuming. He didn't even wait for the elevator, he took the stairs down. He never really liked the smell of the morgue but he had been there so many times over the last few days that he was almost used to it.
"Good morning detective," the friendly mortician said as he walked in.
"Is it?" He snapped.
"Woah, maybe not for you but I had a nitrous breakfast and a fantastic sleep last night so my morning has been great," Dr Morgan said, holding her hands up in defence, "if you insist on being a negative Nancy, I may ask you to kindly leave."
She wore her usual white lab coat over her designer skirt and blouse. Her black Louboutin platforms didn't match their surroundings but she definitely made them work. Her blonde hair fell neatly over her shoulders.
"Sorry," Langley sighed, "what have you got for me today?"
"Not much more then I had for you yesterday," Dr Morgan replied, "are you looking for something in particular?"
"I don't know," Langley replied.
"Well, we just got a fresh bag of 'I don't know' in this morning," Dr Morgan smiled, pointing to the black body bag that was zipped shut and laying on one of the steel examination tables.
Usually he would return her friendly banter but today he just was not feeling it and she seemed to notice.
"Okay. What's wrong with you?" She asked.
"Nothing," he replied but she stood in front of him, one eyebrow raised, hands on her hips. She wasn't buying it.
"Detective Berge is-" he started but she cut him off.
"An egotistical jerk who wouldn't know his head from his ass?" Dr Morgan finished. That gained a chuckle from Langley.
"Yeah, that's about right," he said, still smiling.
"I can't stand that man," she continued, walking around one of the tables and into her office before sitting at her desk.
"He closes cases and that's about all," she said, "what's he done now?"
"The Karma Ashcroft case? Do you remember it?" Langley asked, pulling a chair out to sit cross from her.
"Of course! Closely connected to the Oliver Roads case," she nodded, "is she okay?"
"Yeah, she's still in a coma actually but I don't think Oliver could have done it alone," Langley said, sitting back and running his hands through his hair, "there's too much planning, too much involvement. He would need help."
"But you don't have any suspects?" Dr Morgan prompted.
"I have a suspect, I just don't have any proof. Yet," the detective explained.
"And Berge thinks the case is over?" She said.
"He won't look at the big picture. He just sees that Mr Roads killed himself and that's all," Langley said.
