Chapter 18

Hey guys. I'm going to London/Europe for a few weeks (humble brag) so there may or may not be new updates for a while. I will try to update but I can't promise you anything. Sorry. I hope you're still enjoying the story however :) xx

Detective Langley typed furiously on his computer. He put Amy's phone number into the database and hit enter.

A small dot appeared on the map on his screen. After a quick glance he grabbed his car keys and left the office. He didn't want to waste any time so he put the sirens on and the pedal to the metal.

As he approached the address, he didn't even switch the sirens off and kill lights. He wanted them to know he was coming, to panic and make a mistake. He recognised the place as one of Liam's properties, his art studio. As he got out of the car, he unholstered his weapon. Langley made his way to the front door. It was locked and he had no probable cause to enter so he walked to the window and peered in. The place seemed empty. He was considering kicking the door in anyway when he heard someone.

"KARMA, PLEASE!!"

It sounded like Amy. That was all the probable cause he needed. Without hesitation, Langley ran to the door and kicked it in. The door splintered out of its hinges and swung open. He burst in, gun still at the ready. He ran to where the cry had come from, into the room. He found Amy on the ground, holding Karma's unmoving body, and Jasmine on the other side. He ran to Amy.

"Amy, what happened?" Langley asked.

She shook her head.

"I got here too late," she sobbed.

He looked at Karma and then around the room, his eyes landing on the poison bottle.

"Did they take that?" Langley asked, pointing to the bottle. Amy nodded.

"Okay, Amy," he said, grabbing her shoulders and turning her to face him.

"Is the kidnapper still in the building?" Amy shook her head.

"He's dead," she said. Langley was surprised by the news but didn't dwell on it. He pulled out his phone and dialled.

"This in Detective Langley, badge number 4217. I need an ambulance to 19 Holt Avenue. Two female victims who appear to have been poisoned. Requesting backup. Bells and whistles," he said hanging up.

"Amy, how about you let me try and help her okay?" Langley said gently. He took Karma from her and laid her down flat.

"I need you to go check Jasmine, can you feel a pulse?" He said, indicating to where the other girl was laying.

Amy nodded, getting up and walking over to Jasmine. She took a deep breath and placed two fingers on her pulse point. Langley did the same to Karma, when he couldn't feel a pulse, he placed his ear on her chest, searching for a heartbeat.

"She has a pulse," Amy sniffed.

"Good, okay. Can you roll her into the recovery position?" Langley said. As he spoke, he started compressions.

Amy tried not to look over at where Langley was working on Karma. After she put Jasmine in the recovery position she slumped on the ground. She couldn't even cry anymore, she was in shock. She listened to Langley quietly counting to himself as his hands crashed into Karma's chest.

"Come on, Karma," he said, filling her lungs with his own breath and starting the reps again.

Sirens sounded in the near distance. Amy moved back to Karma's side. Langley continued his pattern, reps, breaths, repeat. Amy felt helpless, she didn't know what to do. She gently placed her hand on top of Karma's and closed her eyes.
