Chapter 5

Dr Walker had said Karma was well enough to be transported to LA General so the next day that's exactly what happened. Dr Walker made sure she rang ahead and gave them notice of their arrival. She also notified the police, as protocol required, seeing as Karma's case was still open and ongoing. Amy road with Karma, as per Karma's request, and her parents weren't far behind in their juice van.

"Do we live near each other?" Karma asked casually as they bounced along in the ambulance.

"Hmm?" Amy said, looking up from her phone. She had been hastily replying to one of Jasmine's many texts from the day before.

"Do I live near you?" Karma rephrased her previous question.

Amy nodded, "same apartment building."

Karma smiled at that. She found comfort in having Amy close and knowing she even lived near by was some what of a relief.

"How long have you been in LA?" Karma asked her like she was an old friend she just happened to bump into at the grocery store.

"Well, actually we moved here together after high school," Amy said, emphasising the 'we'. Karma didn't say anything so Amy continued.

"When we both got excepted into UCLA and, even though it wasn't your first choice, you moved out here with me," Amy smiled as she said it.

"We were roommates at college the first year but now we've both got apartments off campus. It's great," Amy's smile only grew as she explained their situation.

"So you live with Jasmine? Was that her name?" Karma questioned. Amy looked down at her phone instinctively.

"Yeah, Jasmine," Amy started, "Jasmine is actually my girlfriend."

"Okay," Karma tried not hesitate at the new information, "and do I live with someone?"

"Yeah, you live with Liam," the genuine smile had left Amy's features and was replaced with a small fake one. Karma just nodded, unsure of what to say next.

The rest of the trip was quiet. Amy typed away on her phone while Karma fiddled with the corner of her blanket. It didn't take long before they were out of the ambulance and in Karma's new hospital room. This one was a little nicer but had the same make up as the old one.

The one thing Karma definitely missed about Johnson's Memory was Dr Walker. Her new doctor, Dr Keith Morgan, didn't have the same bedside manner and friendly personality as she did. He came when scheduled and spoke only when he needed to. Usually he just popped in for a few minutes, checked the monitors, scribbled in the chart and left without even a hello.

Amy left after the doctors second routine check in and went home to shower, change and try and smooth things over with her girlfriend.

As Amy turned the key in the lock of her apartment she braced herself for a fight but Jasmine wasn't there. She sighed, relieved to say the least, and went straight to the bathroom. Amy striped and jumped into the shower without hesitation. As she let the warm water fall over her back, she thought about everything, about how she had all but lost Karma. Karma was still here but the old Karma that Amy fell in love with freshman year was essentially gone. New Karma couldn't remember the many nights they spent cuddled up on her bed watching Netflix, she couldn't remember sticking stars on the ceiling because Amy was scared of the dark, she couldn't remember what it felt like to have Amy's soft lips on her own.

Someone pulled the shower curtain back suddenly and startled Amy out of her thoughts. She jumped and spun around.

"Jesus, Jasmine! You nearly gave me a coronary!!" Amy exclaimed.

Jasmine didn't say anything, she didn't need to. Her storm out said it all.

"Shit," Amy said under her breath as she clambered out of the shower, rapping a towel around herself.

"Jasmine, babe, talk to me," Amy said as she followed her into the kitchen.

"You leave me a voicemail saying Karma's been in an accident and then I don't hear from you for over 24 hours," Jasmine said with a frustrated tone.

"I know but-" Amy started but Jasmine wasn't finished.

"I know you were losing your mind because of everything but I'm your girlfriend! I am suppose to help you through situations like this, not sit at home worrying," Jasmine's voice softened as Amy stepped towards her and pulled her into an embrace.

Amy sighed, "I'm sorry."

They stood there for a moment just enjoying the closeness of each other's bodies before Jasmine broke away.

"Go get dressed, I assume you'll want to go back to the hospital?" Jasmine said and Amy nodded in response.

"I'll drive."

Amy went to the bedroom and threw on her favourite ripped skinny jeans and plaid shirt. She wasn't sure how she felt about Jasmine coming to the hospital to meet Karma. That was essentially what was happening, she was going to introduce her girlfriend to her new, old BFF. Even though Karma and Jasmine had met more then a dozen times, this was going to be a first encounter for Karma and Amy didn't want her to feel uncomfortable.

On the car ride, Amy explained the situation as best she could and filled Jasmine in one everything that happened to Karma. Jasmine looked at her with sympathy.

"Oh babe, it's more serious then I thought," Jasmine said, taking Amy's hand as she drove, "now I feel bad for blowing up at you."

Amy didn't say anything, she just turned and stare out the window.

"Hey," Jasmine said, squeezing her hand. Amy turned to face her, "It'll be ok."

As much as Amy appreciated her girlfriends reassurance, it wasn't enough. Karma may never get her memory back. It was going to be a long road, but their friendship had been through so much already, Amy was staying optimistic that Karmy would make it through this obstacle too.
