Chapter 26
So much happened so quickly, Karma didn't have time to feel anything in the moment. So when everyone rushed off with Amy, she was left alone and the feelings hit her all at once, like a harsh wave. She stared at the almost dried blood on her shaking hands and her chest felt heavy. It felt like a bad dream, a nightmare she couldn't wake up from. Amy had jumped in front of a bullet for her. Amy had saved her life again. Karma didn't even try to stop the tears as they gently rolled down her cheeks. Her breathing quickened, her heart rate increased, she felt like she was suffocating. Hands wrapped around her shoulders.
"Karma, breathe. It's okay, you're okay," the nurse's voice was calm and comforting but it still took her a few minutes to get her breaths under control.
"I'm- s-so sorry," Karma stuttered through sobs.
"Hey, there's nothing to apologise for okay," the nurse said giving her a small smile.
She eventually let go of Karma's shoulders and pulled a chair over to sit down next to the bed.
"My names Reagan," she said and when Karma could, she responded.
"That's a nice name," she replied.
"Thanks," the nurse smiled, "now, I know this is tough but you have to stay calm. We can't have you having a panic attack again."
Karma just nodded. Reagan noticed the blood on Karma's hands and on the bed and the small trail out the door.
"How about we get you cleaned up?" She said quietly.
Reagan helped Karma up and to the bathroom to wash her hands. Then she stripped the blankets off the bed and replaced them with clean ones. Karma sat, watching as Reagan mopped her best friends blood off the floor of her hospital room.
"I heard everything as it happened,"Reagan said softly as she put the bucket aside to sit down again, "I was just down the hall."
"It just happened so fast," Karma said and Reagan nodded.
"I'm so sorry Karma," the nurse said, taking her hand.
"She saved me," Karma whispered, tears threatening to fall from her eyes once more.
"This is not your fault," Reagan said sternly and Karma just looked at her.
"I know it's unfair and she didn't deserve this, but Amy is in good hands," Reagan continued, there was sadness and anger in her voice.
"It should be me with that bullet," Karma whispered.
"You can't think like that, okay. Amy wouldn't want you to," Reagan said, "no wallowing."
She was right, if Amy had heard her talking like that she would never let her get away with saying it, but Amy wasn't there so Karma let herself wallow.

"You're going away for a long time, Jasmine," Detective Langley said, "this is your one chance to explain yourself."
Jasmine sat in silence for a few minutes, staring at her reflection in the observation glass. Langley didn't press her; he just sat across from her, waiting patiently. Finally she spoke.
"I loved Amy," Jasmine said, "Karma didn't deserve it but as long as she was alive Amy was going to care about her more than anyone else."
Langley wrote notes in his notepad but he didn't speak, leaving the silence for Jasmine to fill again.
"I didn't mean to kill her," tears welled in her eyes, "I loved her."
Jasmine sobbed gently for a moment before something switched and her face turned rigid.
