Chapter 9

Amy woke with a stiff back and an aching neck. She'd fallen asleep in the chair beside the bed, her head resting her arm which was intertwined with Karma's. They'd been talking most of the night, about subjects that weren't important enough for Amy to remember, and she must have fallen asleep.

She stretched her neck, slowly as to not wake Karma. She looked so peaceful while she slept. It was the one time she didn't have to worry about doctors or detectives or people trying to hurt her. She could just be.

Amy tried and failed to unlock her fingers from Karma's, she had a strong grip on them. Of course, Amy didn't mind. Talking all hours of the night, falling asleep in each other's arms and holding hands were all the things Amy missed about high school and about Karma. Amy had flashbacks of the nights Karma would just lay there and hold her until she fell asleep because she was scared of the dark. Amy had always felt safest in Karma's embrace.

Karma groaned a little and rolled onto her side to face Amy. Slowly, her eyes opened and she smiled.

"You stayed," Karma said.

"Of course," Amy replied.

Karma realised she had a grip on Amy's hand and let her go.

"Sorry," she said but Amy just shook her head.

"It's ok," Amy's smiled, clenching her fist a few times to try and get some feeling back in her fingertips. Karma giggled.

"You've got a tighter grip than I remember," Amy joked.

She quickly realised she may have given Karma a clue into their past. She watched Karma's face carefully but her expression remain much the same. She was smiling and Amy loved it when she smiled, her eyes seemed to light up.

Amy's phone went off and she reached behind her to retrieve it. She looked at the message and immediately her own expression changed.

"Shit!" She'd forgotten to tell Jasmine she was staying at the hospital.

"What's up?" Karma asked but Amy didn't hear her, she was reading the message.

Amy, I wanted to be there for you but it seems you don't need me so I'm going to stay at Clare's. I'm not mad at you, I understand Karma is the most important thing on your mind right now. That's fine, but I just can't keep feeling left out and alone. Call me when you're ready. - Jaz xx

"Shit," Amy said again with a sigh.

"What?" Karma said.

"I forgot to text Jasmine last night," Amy replied.

"Oh. Well, maybe you should go call her?" Karma suggested. Amy shook her head.

"I think she sorta dumped me, I'm not sure," Amy gave her a weak smile and handed her the phone.

Karma wasn't sure she felt comfortable reading personal messages between Amy and Jasmine. She gave Amy a "are you sure?" look and Amy just shrugged and nodded.

After Karma had finished reading, she handed the phone back to Amy and just sat there for a moment. Karma realised she was getting between Amy and her girlfriend, unintentionally. It was pretty clear Amy cared more about Karma's health than her love life.

"Amy, I'm sorry," Karma said softly. Amy just brushed her off with a shrug.

Dr Morgan choose that exact moment to make himself present. He walked in with another doctor following close behind.

"Good morning Karma," the other doctor said, "how are you feeling?"

"Good," Karma replied.

Dr Morgan went about doing his thing, checking monitors, reading charts and avoiding eye contact.
