Chapter 10

"Gin!" Karma squealed, slamming her cards down on the table.

"How do you win every time? Technically I've have years more practice than you and I'm still getting my ass whooped," Amy smiled.

"Beginners luck?" Karma said, beaming.

Amy put the deck back together and started dealing out the cards for another round when Dr Morgan walked in with Dr Stevens not far behind him.

"How's the head?" Dr Stevens joked.

"Still dysfunctional," Karma replied.

"No memories? Flashes? Dreams?" Dr Stevens asked. Karma just shook her head.

"That's ok, you're brain has been through a lot. It needs time to heal," the doc explained, "it's only been 2 weeks and you've made a speedy recovery so far."

"It can't be that speedy," Karma said.

"Well it's speedy enough that if, and only if, you promise to continue you exercises you can-," Dr Stevens paused for effect, "go home tomorrow. Isn't that right Dr Morgan?"

Dr Morgan just nodded from the corner where he stood, arms folder across his chest.

"Really?!" Karma exclaimed.

"Pinkie swear you'll do you exercises?" Dr Stevens said, offering Karma his right pinkie.

Karma laughed and wrapped her little finger around his.

"I promise," she said.

After they signed some documents and gave Karma her discharge papers, both the doctors left. Amy gave Karma her best "I knew you could do it" look and leaned over to give her a hug.

"Karms, this is great. You'll finally be out of here and home, where you belong," Amy said into Karma's hair.

"About that..." Karma started. Amy pulled out of their hug and gave her a perplexed look.

"Well, I just-" Karma wasn't exactly sure how to say what she meant. Well, she knew how to say it but not without sounding rude.

"Just what?" Amy urged.

"I don't feel comfortable living with Liam. Not after everything that's happened and you-" Karma paused, trying to find the right words, "you feel familiar."

Amy smiled at her and took her hand.

"Karms, you're welcome to stay with me. I have a spare room and Jasmine isn't-," Amy couldn't finish her sentence. She looked down at their untwined hands. Karma felt guilty even though it wasn't her fault, it wasn't anybody's fault except maybe the person who put her in the hospital.

Amy felt relieved, almost, that Karma wanted to stay with her instead of Liam. To tell the truth, she'd never really trusted the guy.

Detective Langley and Berge arrived at the hospital.

"You said you had something for us," Berge said to Dr Stevens. The doc nodded and gestured for them to follow him to his office.

"I noticed some of my files were rearranged on my desk and on a hunch, I asked security to look at the surveillance footage," Dr Stevens explained.

He hit some keys on his computer and the footage came up on the screen. It showed a figure in a black hoodie, going through some papers on his desk.

"When was this?" Langley asked.

"Yesterday," the doc answered, "it must have been while I was doing my rounds."
