Chapter 7
"Tyre tread results came back," Detective Berge said, dropping a file on his partners desk.
Detective Langley opened the Manila folder and started skimming over the results.
"They came back to a pretty common type of tyre," Langley noted, "doesn't help narrow down our list of suspects."
"Mmm, next page," Berge said with a mouthful of sandwich. Langley flipped to the next page which had "Identified paint flecks" written at the top.
"Mercedes Benz black?" Langley said, raising an eyebrow. Berge just nodded at him.
"So if we find a Benz in need of some panel repairs, we know we've got our guy," Berge said, taking another bite of his ham sandwich.
"Maybe we should swing by the hospital again, ask some follow up questions to Amy Raudenfeld. She seems to know the victim really well and she might be able to shed some light on our new results," Langley suggested.
"Plus, she's hot as hell," Berge chuckled to himself.
Detective Langley was the rookie in the station and being assigned with Berge seemed to be a right of passage for all the new recruits. It wasn't that he was a bad detective, he had one of the highest closure rates in the department, he was just crude and sometimes harsh about the way he handled cases. It was fair to say compassion wasn't Detective Berge's forte.
Liam climbed into the passenger seat of Amy's Camaro and they drove to the hospital. As they walked towards the front entrance in awkward silence, Amy heard someone call her name. She turned to see Detectives Langley and Berge walking towards them.
"Miss Raudenfeld, we were wondering if we could ask you a few follow up questions about Karma Ashcroft?" Langley explained.
"Sure," Amy said before turning to Liam, "I'll meet you up there."
Liam nodded and walked inside. Amy turn back to the detectives. A cool breeze picked up, tousling her hair around. Berge wasn't wrong before, Langley thought to himself, Amy was a stunning woman.
"How can I help?" Amy asked, a shiver ran through her body and she wrapped her arms around herself instinctively.
"Let's go inside," Langley suggested.
It was warm inside. They walked in and sat down at one of the tables in the cafeteria. Berge leaned back and folded his arms across his chest, he figured this was the rookie's idea so he could handle it.
"Um, so as you know we have been investigating Miss Ashcroft's case with the possibility of foul play," Langley said and Amy nodded.
"We received results today regarding the other vehicle involved," Langley continued, he definitely had Amy's full attention, "do you know anyone who would want to deliberately hurt Karma?"
Amy sat there silently for a moment. She couldn't think of anyone at all who would want to hurt her best friend. She was kind and loving, sure she could be selfish at times but that's what made Karma, Karma.
"Honestly, no. Everyone loves Karma," Amy replied finally. Langley nodded.
"Do you know anyone with a black Mercedes Benz?" Langley watched Amy take in what he asked. A look of understanding crossed her face as she came to grips with what he meant and then the look turned to one of surprise and panic.
"Liam," she gasped, "no, no! He wouldn't"
Amy started questioning everything she knew about Liam, everything they had been through together, everything him and Karma had been through. Who was he?
"Stay here," Berge ordered her as he stood up.
"Karma!" Amy said, standing up so fast her chair tipped backwards.
"Wait here, everything is going to be fine," Langley said before hurrying to follow his partner.
Like hell Amy was going to wait there. She waited until they were out of sight and sprinted for the stairs. She climbed, two steps at a time before she burst onto the third floor. She jogged down the hall to Karma's room. Amy quickly realised the detectives must have taken the elevator. They wouldn't be far behind her so Amy forced herself to slow to a walk as she entered the room.
Liam sat in a chair beside Karma's bed, listening to her tell a story about how one of the nurses played a practical joke on Dr Morgan. Amy closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
"Liam?" She said, "can I talk to you outside?"
She was not only buying time but she was also trying to get him away from Karma. He nodded and followed her out.
"What's up?" He asked when they were in the hallway.
"Langley and Berge wanted to ask you some routine questions," Amy said, trying to keep her voice steady.
"Ok," Liam said.
Amy heard the elevator ding and soon Langley and Berge approached the them delicately. Langley saw Liam with Amy and let out the breath he had been holding.
She must have taken the stairs, he thought, smart girl.
He moved quickly to defuse the situation.
"Liam, we were wondering if you could give us your statement?" Langley said calmly.
"Ok," Liam just nodded and followed the detectives down the hall. Berge grabbed Liam's arm and guided him to the elevator. As soon as they disappeared, Amy went back to Karma's room. As soon as she saw Karma, sitting up in bed eating her third cup of chocolate pudding, she relaxed.
"So, what was that about?" Karma asked.
Now that the police had Liam, Amy didn't want to worry her so she did the one thing she never used to do with Karma. She lied.
"Nothing really. I think the cops just want to take Liam's statement," Amy said.
Old Karma would have picked up straight away that Amy was lying but thankfully for her, new Karma didn't have that intuition, yet.
Karma simply shrugged and held out her half eaten pudding.
"Want some?" She asked and gained a smile response from Amy.
Karma shuffled over in her bed so Amy could sit next to her and handed her the cup and spoon. Amy ate the pudding in silence while Karma told her the story she had been telling Liam earlier.
Amy never wanted to feel the same fear and panic she had that night ever again. But she had felt it not two minutes ago, coursing through her veins as she climbed the stairs. Could Liam have really done this?
