Chapter 25

Detective Langley finished recording Karma's words in his notebook and tucked it safely back into its place in his jacket.

"I know how hard this must have been for you Miss Ashcroft, so thank you," he said, giving her a genuine smile.

Karma fiddled with her hands and nodded slightly. He could see the beginning of tears forming in her eyes. The detective wanted to reassure her it would be okay but he wasn't sure how exactly to do that.

"I'll leave you to rest," Langley said, standing up to leave, "would you like me to send Miss Raudenfeld in?"

"Yes, thank you," Karma said, trying to give him a smile.

Langley disappeared and Karma was left alone with her thoughts. Replaying the memories had made them linger and burn at the front of her mind. She felt so terrified.

---

Her heart was pounding in her ears, her breath came out heavy and forced. She was running so fast. Anger pumped through her veins.

Amy finally reached the end of the hallway. If she turned left she knew she would have trouble stopping herself from doing something she would inevitably regret. She stood for a moment, paused in mid thought, then quickly turned right.

Amy pushed through the door that seemed so familiar to her and climbed the steps, two at a time. As she burst through the doorway, onto the roof, the sun hit her face with a forceful warmth, making her squint her eyes. She walked to the edge and looked down at the ebb and flow of people below. They looked like ants, just coming and going. Amy released her fists that were still clenched at her sides and collapsed. The concrete scraped her knees through her jeans when she fell.

Her body shook violently, she couldn't control it. Amy couldn't pinpoint exactly where her anger was directed. She wasn't sure if she more furious at the person who tried to kill her soulmate or at herself for not seeing it. How could she let this happen? How could she let herself trust ever trust them? How could she let them hurt Karma?

The thoughts running through her mind were too much. She had kissed a killer's lips, she had lived with her, shared a bed with her. Amy felt dirty and betrayed. She clenched her jaw and almost growled as her fist connected with the concrete. Once, twice, three times. Blood stained the ground but all Amy could see was Jasmine standing over Karma, syringe in hand, smirking at what she had accomplished.

Tears fell hot and fast down Amy's face. She didn't even try to contain her sobs. She stopped punishing her already damaged hand and lay down. The warmth from the roof washed over her body. She held herself, curled up in the foetal position and just cried, hard, for what seemed like hours. When her sobs finally calm down to sniffs and she could breath again, she sat up. Amy dangled her legs over the edge of the roof and looked out at the horizon.

As she felt the wind gently tousle her hair around her face, it terrified her to think how easy she knew it would be to end it all, all the suffering, all the heartache, right then and there. Farrah and Bruce would be sad for a few weeks, maybe months, but they would recover and she doubted Lauren would hardly notice she was gone. Amy knew it would hurt them but she knew they would be okay. There was only one person Amy couldn't stand the thought of leaving, not now, and that was Karma. Her words ran through Amy's head of how she trusted her, how she felt so familiar even though nothing else did. She wasn't selfish enough to leave Karma, not when she needed her.
