Chapter 21
Amy hadn't known where she was running at first but she realised soon enough. She burst through the doors of Karma's hospital room and fell to her knees at the bedside. The tears that filled her eyes were full of relief as she grabbed Karma's hand and kissed the back of it several times. The steady beep of her heart monitor rang in her ears.
"Miss Raudenfeld?" Someone said from behind her.
Amy turned to face the detective and quickly wiped her face clean of tears.
"I-I thought sh-she was dead. The news said she was dead," Amy managed to say.
Detective Langley was by her side in an instant, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"Miss Raudenfeld, I'm terribly sorry. I had hoped you wouldn't see the news until I was able to fill you in," Langley said, handing her his handkerchief.
She took the cloth, uttering a "thanks" under her breath. She looked up at him with weary, confused eyes.
"What do you mean?" Amy asked, the handkerchief stifling a sniffle.
"I should have informed you of my motives first, I'm sorry," he apologised again and began pacing the small room.
"Detective?" Amy prompted.
She stood and sat on the edge of Karma's bed, still holding onto her best friend's hand. Detective Langley stopped pacing, only to close the curtains and blinds of the room. As he walked, he talked.
"With Miss Ashcroft's attacker still out there I wanted to find a way to protect her," he started but Amy quickly interrupted.
"By killing her?" Amy said, almost frustrated. Langley nodded.
"If Mr Roads' accomplice thinks Miss Ashcroft is deceased, they won't come after her," Langley explained.
Amy understood but her heart ached with even the thought of losing Karma. She'd been on such and emotional roll coaster the past couple of days, she wasn't sure how much more she could take.
"I also hope to use the knowledge of Karma's fake demise as a interrogation technique," the detective continued.
Amy hadn't really been paying attention anymore, she was staring at Karma. She placed her hand on the auburn haired girl's cheek and stoked it gently with the thumb of her good hand. The gesture didn't go unnoticed by the detective, he could clearly see how much Amy cared for Karma.
"When will she come back to me?" Amy asked in a small voice without looking at the detective.
"I don't know, I'm sorry," Langley said, "but I can't use my authority to find out."
Amy turned to him and he smiled. Her lips turning up into a weary, but thankful, grin. He left the room then and Amy was alone with an unconscious Karma. Amy looked down at the beautiful young woman who had almost died on her twice already, this time would have been the third. She was anxious for her to wake up. There was so much Amy had to say, so much she had to tell Karma, and she no longer cared for the repercussions. She was going to tell her how she really felt and if Karma rejected her again, so be it. Amy would deal with that heartbreak, she'd survived once she could do it again. She had to tell her how she really felt.

Langley casually strolled down the hallway to Dr Carter's office. He knocked lightly on the door and enter when he gained a response.
"Hi, detective. How can I help you?" The doctor said, looking up from the papers she was reading.
"I have another question about Karma Ashcroft," he said, sitting down in front of the desk.
