Chapter 28
A short one but hopefully a good one? xx
It had been a week. A week since Amy was shot, a week since they had realised each other's feelings, a week since Karma had literally run away from the person she loved. They hadn't talked about it and Karma didn't plan on talking about it any time soon.
"If you promise to take it easy, I see no reason why you can't go home today," Dr Carter said.
Amy was itching to leave, she had been for a while, she didn't like hospitals and she'd spent a lot of time in them over the last couple months. Karma was perched on the chair in the corner, listening to the conversations but not weighing in.
"It will still be minimal movement and no strenuous activity," Dr Carter continued, "can you handle that?"
"Yes, I think I can manage," Amy replied.
"Karma, you will have to make sure she takes it easy," the doctor said, turning to face Karma who's mind was elsewhere.
"Mm? Yes! Of course," Karma replied when she finally realised she was being talked to.
"Okay, I'll go finish getting your paperwork done so you can leave," Carter said, walking out the door.
"Are you okay?" Amy asked when they were alone.
"Yeah, why?" Karma replied.
"You just seem to be staring at the wall a little too aggressively," the blonde said.
"Sorry, I'm fine," Karma reassured.
"Okay," Amy said, sounding a little sceptical.
"Are you excited to be leaving?" Karma asked casually.
"Yeah, it feels like forever since we were home," Amy sighed.
Karma noted how she said 'we' but didn't mention it or think too much of it. She wasn't about to have that conversation with Amy, not yet.
"I miss my bed," Amy continued.
---
"Oh my gosh! Yes!" Amy squealed as she walked, half limped, through the door of her apartment, "home, sweet home!"
Karma laughed at her and put their bags down in the hall so she could lock the door. Amy collapsed on the couch and automatically regretted the sudden movement as it put pressure on her wound. She winced and Karma was at her side immediately.
"Are you okay?" She asked.
"I'm fine really, it was my bad," Amy reassured her, "I should have known."
"Okay, be careful," Karma said, checking the other girl over.
Amy just smiled and gently placed her hand over Karma's which was hovering over the bandage on her stomach. They stayed in that position for a few moments, Amy looking at Karma and Karma staring at their hands, before Karma broke the silence.
"I'll get you something to eat," she said, taking her hand back from Amy and walking into the kitchen.
"I'll help you," Amy said following.
"No, you rest," Karma insisted.
"Karms, I'm not dead, I can help you make toasted sandwiches," the blonde joked.
Karma's reaction was just to stare at Amy at first, but her facial expression eventually softened and she ignored Amy's comment as best she could. She knew she was joking but it still struck home.
"Fine, but don't get in my way," Karma finally agreed.
Amy smiled and nodded. For a short while they worked in silence, Amy buttering the bread and Karma putting the rest of the sandwich together.
"I want to thank you for being there for me," Amy said as she put the sandwiches in the toaster.
"Where else would I be?" Karma asked, walking over to her.
"You didn't have to be by my side the whole time but you were and I appreciate that so much," the blonde continued.
"Aims, I care about you so much," Karma said, gently tipping Amy's chin so she would look at her, "I love you, I'm not going anywhere."
It kind of slipped out automatically but they both heard it. Love was a word that hadn't been spoken in a week but it didn't mean anything less. Karma blushed a little and pulled back but Amy stepped into her again, wrapping her arms around Karma's waist.
"I know we've had a rough start and I don't want to pressure you into anything you don't want to do but I'd really like to kiss you right now," Amy said, smiling broadly.
It was like Amy had read her mind that day at the hospital a week ago. Karma was so scared of taking it to the next level because what if she messed it up. To Karma this was a first for her and it terrified her so much.
Karma looked at Amy thoughtfully for a moment before replying.
"But what if I suck at it? I've never done it before," she said.
"I'll teach you," Amy whispered.
They looked in each other's eyes for what seemed like forever before a loud beeping noise interrupted them.
"Shit!" Amy said turning to see smoke pouring out of the sandwich toaster.
"Agh!"
She grabbed the sandwiches out and started waving a towel at the smoke alarm. Karma had her hands over her ears while she laughed at Amy freaking out. When the alarm was finally off, Amy stood, sadly staring at their sandwiches in the sink.
"I think they are a little over cooked but-" she didn't finish her sentence because Karma's lips crashed against hers for less than a second before she pulled away.
"Ow, okay," Amy said, gently touching her injured lip.
"I am so sorry, oh my gosh," Karma said, covering her face with her hands.
Amy smiled and walked over to her, gently pulling Karma into her once more. Karma took her hands off her face and rapped them around Amy.
"Hey, it's okay," Amy said, pulling back a little so she could gently hold Karma's face in her hands.
Amy leant in, the smile on her face was enormous. Karma was so still, her eyes flickering from Amy's to her lips and back to her eyes. It seemed like slow motion, Amy took her time. Karma was patient, her lips slightly parted, waiting.
Their lips brushed briefly before Amy made full contact. At first, she kissed Karma like she was breakable but soon Karma reciprocated and the kiss intensified. It was heated but it was gentle, filled with love and passion.
Karma's mind was racing at a million miles an hour to match her heartbeat. Her thoughts went to the first time they kissed in front of the whole school, to the time they kissed on the grass at lunch, when they kissed during the threesome, when she kissed Amy in the pool at Shane's party.
Amy pulled back just enough so they could both catch their breath.
"Woah," Karma breathed.
"I know," Amy responded.
