Lenny's fever had been completely gone the next day and two days later, she was feeling a lot better but Nina and I decided it would be best for her to stay out of school for the rest of the week. Nina stayed with me the entire time and I'm thankful that she did because I wouldn't have been able to do it alone.
Slowly, things felt like they were going back to the way they were now that Nina has spent a few nights at my house. Especially the small things.
She was singing in the kitchen again.
She wasn't sleeping with her back turned against me.
She was actually letting me steal a few kisses from her.
Those were all small things that I'd missed so much and that now I was thankful to slowly have again.
The only thing I was missing was calling her mine.
It was Friday now and I was on my way to drop off Lenny at Rosa's house. I had a business meeting with a publisher named Maria at a restaurant for the book I'd been working on and Nina has her interview today so I wasn't able to leave Lenny with her.
Of course, Casey would have been nice to consider as a babysitter but I think we'd traumatized her enough with Lenny being ill.
As soon as I've stopped at Rosa's house, I'm helping Lenny step out of my car and holding her hand all the way to the front of the door.
"Can I ring the doorbell, dad?" Lenny whispers. "Please?"
"Yes you may, baby." I respond watching excitement fill her face. "Go on."
She grins, pressing the round button as we hear the jingle ring from inside the house. When the door doesn't open immediately, Lenny is asking me for permission to press the doorbell again and just as I'm about to tell her to be patient, the door opens up.
"Buenas tardes!" (Good afternoon!) Rosa says smiling at me before her eyes land down at Lenny. "Cómo te sientes hoy? Tu mami me dijo que estabas enferma." (How are you feeling today? Your mommy told me you were sick.)
Lenny shyly looks down, nodding and I look up at Rosa with a laugh. "Se siente mejor hoy. Right, Lenny?" (She feels better today. Right, Lenny?)
"Si no se siente bien, voy a tener que comerme los dulces que le compré." (If she doesn't feel well, I'll have to eat the candy I bought her.) Rosa hums.
At the mention of sweets, Lenny looks back up almost instantly and I let out a gasp. "Did you hear that?" My baby nods and Rosa opens the door letting a now very excited Lenny inside.
Well, she's recovered pretty quickly.
"Gracias Rosa! llámame si me necesitas." (Thank you Rosa! Call me if you need me.) I say to her before extending my arms out to Lenny. "Hey, aren't you going to say goodbye or have you already traded me for some candy?"
