Throughout Lenny's toddler years, she was a very quiet baby. She never gave us trouble and surprisingly didn't cry throughout the night unless she was hungry. She never babbled or made a single sound. Nina and I practically made it a competition when we tried to get her to say her first words.

At the age of 3, she was slowly learning how to speak word by word. A little late on development, but doctors reassured us it was nothing to be too worried about. They told us it wouldn't effect her in the near future, which made Nina and I feel slightly better about the entire situation.

I was the first one that pointed out her speech impediment. Noticing, she was sounding out the letter 's', much like I did when I was a child.

I was made fun of it a lot for it, actually.

So, to avoid it from happening to Lenny, I show her a set of flash cards with pictures to practice her pronunciation.

"And what's this a picture of?" I ask my daughter, holding up the small card with a picture of a red strawberry on it.

She thinks for a moment and tilts her head to the side in wonder. Her eyebrows furrow and she's deep in focus before she lets out a frustrated sigh. I know she's already losing her patience with me because she's moving around in her seat, her eyes only set at the sweet dessert I've bribed her with.

"T- tawberry," Lenny says, reaching out for the bright pink cupcake in front of us.

"Strawberry," I correct her, pulling the dessert away from her reaching. "Ssss- look at my mouth, darling. You can have it right after we're done." I point to my lips.

She frowns at me, shakes her head and lets out an upset whine. It was clear that she had inherited her stubbornness from Nina. I usually had a lot of more patience with Lenny but lately I'd been so stressed about my new book I'd been planning to write that I just couldn't think straight.

"Lennon! Just repeat after me!" I say raising my voice a little more harshly.

Lenny begins to hiccup and suddenly her brown eyes begin to shine and build up with tears.

And then she started crying.

"Oh no! No don't cry, baby," I say to her trying to calm her down. "I'm sorry for raising my voice. Here, have your cupcake." I say pushing the cupcake towards her.

Those 4 magical words made her instantly stop her crying.

And I mean, instantly.

My mouth is wide open in shock and I watch her take the cupcake into her small hands, slide off the chair and skip into the living room happily as if nothing had even happened.
