The next morning after picking up Lennon, I woke up to the sun shining brightly against my face. Stretching out my arms, I let out a tired yawn. I'm still exhausted as I'd slept late due to my racing thoughts about Nina and whoever she was seeing.
As ridiculous as it sounds, she'd been on my mind so much that I'd actually dreamt her last night. She was wearing the same incredible red dress and lipstick I'd seen her in. She also wore her beautiful, classic Nina smile that'd I'd always adored as soon as I'd opened that door. She'd run into my arms and we'd spent the night together. My heart raced and in that moment, I'd felt a victory in finally winning her back. She was dressed like this for me.
She wanted only me.
But then I'd woken up.
Remembering the events of my dream, my heart somehow manages to hurt a little more today than most days. But I know I have to find the energy in me to get out of bed and have Lennon ready for our day. A smile for my baby, everything I do is for her.
Turning over, I expected to find my daughter beside me sleeping peacefully, but all I saw were white wrinkled sheets.
Confused, I sit up and slip on a white tank top from my dresser. She's not one to wander, usually the one to wake me.
"Lennon?" I call out. Taking a peek into her bedroom, I don't see her inside causing a slight panic to form in my chest. "Lenny!" I call again.
I quickly walk downstairs to find my best friend Casey standing in my kitchen staring back at me with a snack size Cheeto bag she'd probably grabbed from my pantry. With a blank stare, she takes another one slowly into her mouth. "I hope you don't mind. Thought I'd help myself to your daughters snacks."
"Where's Lennon?" I ask, my starts to race as I don't see her when I glance around the house.
Casey nods her head over to the couch where I see two little feet facing up. Lennon is upside down on the couch watching a Disney movie softly.
"Oh, thank god." I mumble.
At random times, I'd walk into my house to see Casey either sitting on my couch or eating my food.
I've grown to know this is normal ever since I had moved out of Nina's place. Casey and I have been best friends since my first day of college. She sat next to me in my first English lecture and we'd always proof read each others work. After that we became practically inseparable. That was until, Casey dropped out a month later and left me all alone.
She was smart and she'd gotten into a successful college just as I had, but school just wasn't for her. Just like school wasn't for everyone.
And now she's standing in my kitchen.
I've never given her a key and I still have no idea how she manages to gets inside but I haven't necessarily asked.
"Goodmorning daddy!" Lenny says cheerfully looking back and waving at me.
