While Alex had fun with his family in Michigan, Gabriel Beaumont was in Paris. That was where he was born twenty-seven years ago and hopefully, he will stay there for the rest of his life. There wasn't a better place like home.
Speaking of home, that was where he was right now all alone. It felt that he had done that quite often lately so that wasn't anything new. Besides, he wasn't alone since he had his cat with him. Bernadette had been with him for a long time and she was one of the few beings who had seen him at his lowest.
Instead of crying for being so lonely, he was writing down new possible recipes for the bakery but wasn't sure of what to pick or if he should even pick anything of them.
He couldn't do a lot of things but baking? That he knew. Having started already when he was nothing but a child, he had gotten a lot of time to learn and get experience. His favorite teacher was of course his dear grandmother but he also learned a lot from school in culinary classes.
Eventually, Gabriel got a job of it and then second, third, fourth and many others until he got where he was now: the owner of his own bakery. At some point, he was afraid to open it and wasn't even sure if he was good enough for that. His insecurities were his biggest enemy but eventually he learned how to deal with them.
Now he was more confident of his baking and most of the hours of the day went to work. It was his passion and he couldn't tell what else there was that gave him as much pleasure. Well, not anymore at least but there used to be something, someone he loved even more.
Suddenly his phone started to ring and he answered it without taking his eyes off the recipes that were on the screen. "Allô!" (Hello!)
"Où es-tu?" (Where are you?) The caller was his best friend Élise Codieux who sounded very annoyed to him for some reason. Honestly, he didn't really care at the moment because right now she was distracting him.
"Domicile." (Home) He kept writing, not fully focusing on the conversation that hadn't even fully begun.
"Tu étais censé être ici il y a quinze minutes!" (You were supposed to be here fifteen minutes ago!) It took him a while until he realized that she was right. Today was Sunday and they agreed to hang out together since both of them had a day off from work.
Élise had wasted a lot of time on moving to a new house and making it look like home. Her asshole of a fiancé had cheated on her and because of that, she had quickly decided that she couldn't live at their old home anymore.
So she had moved to her new apartment, just like he had done. A fresh start was what she wanted, no, needed and Gabriel understood that all too well. It was almost ironic that both of them had lost a partner in less than a year but at least they got each other.
Although, it felt like his marriage ended years ago despite the divorce being finalized only in November. That had hurt like hell and he never wanted it to happen but now, after being single for nine months, Gabriel understood just how necessary it was.
"Je partais déjà, ne sois pas si impatient!" (I was already leaving, don't be so impatient!) The truth was that he was still in his boxers that he slept in and wasn't planning to leave anywhere today. Oh well, she didn't need to know that for a while he had completely forgotten her existence.
"Ne ment pas pour moi. Je sais que tu es paresseux et toujours au lit!" (Don't lie to me, I know you're lazy and still in bed)
