Today was time to visit his parents. It had been a while since Gabriel had seen them in person and he felt bad about it. Usually, they met at least once a month, hopefully even more if it was possible, but now it was closer to two months.
Both of his parents were in their early fifties and still worked hard. His father Thomas Beaumont was in the marketing business and his mother Simone was an accountant. It was clear that his choice of career was very different from theirs but fortunately, they didn't care at all what he was doing for a living.
As far as he could tell, those two were happy and still lived a peaceful life. They always wanted more children but it never happened. Perhaps that was one reason why they treated Leo almost as their second son even before they got engaged. They had truly loved Leo and never said a bad word about him. Well, never until that happened.
Their divorce was hard for his parents too. At first, they tried to make Gabriel give Leo a chance but after hearing the details, they understood why he couldn't do that. It was like their attitudes and opinions about Leo had changed completely in one day.
Driving to their house, Gabriel started to think of what would they say about Alex. Why his mind went to that of all things, he didn't know. It's not like Alex had much time to even meet them! Still, he couldn't help but wonder what would happen if they met.
They would most likely be polite and friendly towards Alex but maybe feel a bit wary about the man. Gabriel could see that maybe they wouldn't want them to get too close because there was a bigger risk that Gabriel would get his heart broken again. Honestly, he had wondered that too and the distance was a little scary for any kind of relationship.
Once he was at his destination, he left his car on their driveway and walked in with his spare key, knowing that he never had to ring the doorbell. "Mère? Père? Je suis ici!" (Mom? Dad? I'm here!)
"Dans la cuisine!" (In the kitchen!) his father's deep, familiar voice was heard around the house. Following the voice, Gabriel went to the kitchen where he grew up in and saw both of them cooking together, side by side.
"Bonjour! Comment ca va?" (Hey! How are you?) His mother quickly kissed him to both of his cheeks at him before returning to cutting the vegetables. As if that wasn't strange enough, they stared at each other while raising eyebrows, almost like they were having some kind of unspoken conversation.
Frowning, Gabriel tried to figure out if he had done something that made them somehow angry without even seeing them but came up with nothing. Usually, the welcome was much warmer and friendlier. Sure, they couldn't drop the food but that didn't change the fact that they were acting as if they didn't want him there!
"Rien de spécial, juste travailler." (Nothing special, just work) he was looking back and forth between his two strangely behaving parents.
"C'est bien. Le travail est important, rappelez-vous que, fils," (That's good. Work is important, remember that, son) his father said and gave him a quick smile. Immediately Gabriel got the feeling that they were hiding something from him and he couldn't help but worry about what had happened.
Was someone hurt? Did either one of them got fired? Were they moving far? Were they sick? All kinds of situations ran through his mind and none of them were good.
"Je vais garder ça à l'esprit ... père." (I'll keep that in mind... father) Gabriel smiled awkwardly, staring at them, waiting for more. No one said a word as he continued watching them cooking. Then he started to count to ten before dropping the question but luckily they interrupted him before he finished.
