DARYL
Nate and me finished our reconnoitre. Ticking off the majority of spots on the map that Dwight had given to Gregory.
I'm keeping my dark thoughts to myself this time.
Probably cos I can see the realisation, no....the truth....whack her in the face. Over and over as each one turns up empty. Totally devoid of any Saviors who should be setting up shop.
Now, we're just waiting for the others to catch up. Then we'll all go together on foot to check out the final one. Where Dwight had indicated the largest contingent would be stationed as a roadblock.
If they're even gonna be there at all....that is.
Coming back from anointing a tree, I caught Nate rollin her head around. Massaging her temples before she blew out a breath and tied her hair back.
"Just a slight headache is all. It'll come good" She answered softly when I gave her a look.
Then huffed out another tiny sigh when I tilted her chin.
I rummage around in my pack. Looking for the little first-aid kit Siddiq had made up from the new supplies.
He'd handed the same out to everyone. Told us we might need them if it comes to a fight. Prayed we won't need to, though.
Before she mounted my bike this mornin, I heard him whispering to Nate. That Rick had asked him, and finally heard what was said. Must've been somethin important? Cos it kept her spirits up for a little while at least.
When I ripped a packet of tablets apart, she shook her head. Started to mouth 'No'.
"Open. Paracetamol. Doc said these only, though....if yer or Mags ever need it. None of the Aspirin or Ibuprofen."
Reckon if I'm ever asked to describe my missus to a stranger? I'll probably go with 'Sometimes....doesn't follow instructions well'. Those comin from her husband, anyway.
On this occasion, though? I ain't gonna give her a choice but to obey.
"Yer eyes can't hide it, woman. So quit yer bitchin and open yer damn mouth!"
When I clamped her nose shut, her lips pried apart in shock. I popped the little tablet in and followed that up quick smart with my water bottle. Then waited until I saw her throat bob as she swallowed.
"Good girl! Now talk to me, Nate" Kissed her forehead before straddling the seat to face her.
"I'm sorry for teasing you this morning. And....I owe you another apology. You were a hundred percent right, Daryl and I was wrong. So very wrong again."
She confessed to my chest, couldn't bring her eyes to meet mine.
"Wrong about what?" I'm baffled.
"Dwight....Eugene. Guess I've just been deluding myself all this time, huh? Such a fucking Little Idiot" Nate's eyes closed in shame.
"And I AM just one big, stubborn, pain in the ass."
"Yeah, ain't gonna argue with that. But yer still my stubborn pain in the ass of a Little Idiot and don't yer ever forget it again. Believin....trustin? They kept yer goin, Nate."
"Sure as shit keeps me goin now, that's for certain."
"What....how?" She tilted her face up to mine now.
"Yer never stop believin in me, huh. No matter how many times or good reasons I give yer? Yer never once give up on me."
"Look, Baby Girl. Just cos things are lookin bad right now with the both of them? It doesn't mean that I'm right and yer wrong. Even though I am....and yer are " I teased her with a wink.
