NATE

Untangled myself from Daryl without waking him and only just  made it to the downstairs dunny.

Quickly closed the door on Mutt's sleepy yet always nosy face.

By the time I eventually flushed, closed the lid and plonked my butt on it? He was madly scrabbling at the door and starting to whine even louder.

My fingers reached out to turn the knob and he nosed his way in with a victorious grin.

"I shut it, Fur-brain....so Daddy wouldn't wake up from all the noise. And Mummy can have herself a little privacy or retain some dignity at least"  My grumble is full of strop.

He plonked his head on my knees, giving me sad doggie eyes until I began rubbing his ears.

The 'Leaning Tower of Nate'  eventually succumbed to gravity....or exhaustion rather. My head slumped against the wall, and I let out a sigh.

Today is already shaping up to be another long one.

Mrs Dixon? YOU HAVE GOT TO LEARN HOW TO SAY NO!

Say no....and not cave afterwards.

You don't have to help out every  single time you're asked. The workload can be shared around a bit. Especially now that everyone in Alexandria is eagerly stepping up to the plate.

Yeah....but if you don't  go with Eugene today? Then you'll have no excuse. For when Jorge or Morgan come to drag you off and beat your ass into the dirt.

How long do you think you can keep this up? Sooner or later they're going to demand explanations instead of cop-outs, you idiot! And Dixon will be even more  pissed off with you than he already is.

"Nup, Derpa. Stop fucking kidding yourself. If you keep going on like this? Then explanations won't be necessary"  I groan to myself.

After flushing the toilet again, I make a beeline for the upstairs bathroom to brush my teeth and gargle.

***

It's been just over three weeks since our double-header against the Saviors.

I did exactly what Daryl asked without question. Was just opening the gates to let G, Leo and the others head off towards the compound when I heard the procession of vehicles coming our way.

Big Sis climbed out of the wagon. Pale, trembling and clinging onto Glenn. Yet she still gave me a shaky smile and mouthed 'All good'  before being whisked off to the Infirmary.

This time, I believed her.

"I'm not hurt, I'm fine!  Stop fussing and just let me go home....you do the same"  Carol growled at Daryl.

That  one was a lie, for sure  😧

He tried to hand her over to me, telling her I'd give her a hand and stay with her.

"Carol, please let...."

"Leave me be, Nate"  She pulled herself out of my arms.

Stalked off with both Daryl and I watching....worrying.

"I'll try again later, Babe."

Except, when I took over some soup and cornbread in the evening? Tobin said she was asleep. And she's made herself scarce since then.

Her excuses were never-ending, too  😔

Daryl tried as well yesterday, but Carol still wasn't opening up.
