NATE
"Hell, no way! T'aint had this much fun in an age. I'M GOIN AGAIN!"
She almost ran over Jorge and Earl when they tried in vain to stop her. Did a wide arc on the runway and then gunned it, crunching gears as she went.
They stood there with mouths gaping and heads shaking. While Tammy started tooting the truck's air horn. Driving like she was Daniel Ricciardo in an F1 race car.
Don't think that my fellow West Aussie needed to sit on a couple of pillows to see out of his windscreen, though? 🤣
I jump into the little golf cart. Steer it back towards the main building, and leave them to their driving lessons.
Though I must admit to being a little envious now. In hindsight? Think I would've liked burning up some mega-rubber as much as Tammy obviously does.
Cést la vie 🙃
When they dropped their bombshell yesterday? It was mine and Jorge's turn with the solemn looks.
"If the rest of the folk back at your home are like you and the big feller here? Then there's no other place we'd rather be. If you'll have us....that is" Her voice was tentative.
Afraid that we'd knock them back, maybe? Hell to the no!
Well....kind of?
"Of course we do! It's just....we don't know what we're heading back into. Could be an all-out warzone or something a million times worse. I can't guarantee that you'll be safe."
"We'll come back and get you when it's over. I swear, Tammy....we were gonna do that regardless."
"Honey, nobody can guarantee any kind of safety no more. This is our life now, and the three of us? We're gonna keep living it the way we want, no matter how long we got left!"
"Them Saviors? T'aint gonna let that scum be saving our asses....that's for dang sure!"
What was once a silly theory is now a silly certainty for me.
Whatever malady caused the end of the world, and completely wiped out ninety-nine point nine percent of the population? It was pretty darned selective in who got to stick around.
The Un-Dead, the Living Dead and the rest of us. Those who are as stubborn as shit, I mean 😉
So, that was that....on that!
Tammy, Earl and Jorge will each drive a big articulated truck. Kenny has proven himself more than capable of taking a tanker full of diesel.
And I'll be in the Explorer with Muttles, about a half-hour ahead of the convoy. Keeping in touch via the new long-range walkies. So I can warn them of any road hazards or whatever.
We spent the rest of yesterday exploring the warehouse and its surrounds. Making notes of all the things to pack up and take home with us on this initial trip.
And today we started loading up. One truck packed solid....two more to go 😕
Dixon's extended deadline is looming fast. Yet by the looks of things, Jorge has no intention of calling quits on our little road trip anytime soon. So we can get home and help fight the fight.
Needless to say, the delay is more than doing my head in.
Because the bad feeling that started yesterday? Is now eating me alive. And if overthinking also burned calories?
