The Fellowship began the trek to Mount Doom. I had never been this far from the Shire, let alone this far across Middle Earth. Legolas the elf was watching in the distance to make sure we weren't being followed, he was able to see miles ahead due to him being an elf. He was from the Woodland Realm in the city of Mirkwood, his father Thranduíl was the king. Boromir was a knight coming along with us to add another sword to the Fellowship. Gimli the dwarf was from the Misty Mountains, his father Dwalin had been with Bilbo on the adventure to take back their home of Erebor. It was exciting to see so many extraordinary people in one place; all I have known about elves and dwarves was from stories I've read. I was in awe they were right in front of me.
After hiking for most of the day, we stopped for the night and built a campsite. It was getting cold and starting to snow, so we built a fire. I bundled up in my cloak and warmed myself by the fire. The men were asleep, and I was trying to. I was freezing, and I was miserable. I couldn't break now, we weren't even close to Mordor.
I decided to sing to myself to calm down, it was a song I've heard sung by others to tell of adventure:
Home is behind
The world ahead, and there are many paths to tread.
Through shadow
To the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight
Mist and shadow
Cloud and shade
All shall fade
All shall fade
"You sing beautifully." Legolas told me. I had no idea that he was awake. "Thank you," I answered politely. I adjusted my cloak nervously. This was my second time talking to an elf. Legolas smiled, "I never knew hobbits were so interesting." "What's interesting about us?" I inquired. "You have spirit, Daisy. You're brave and adventurous. I thought hobbits were supposed to live quietly." he told me innocently. I didn't get offended by his answer, because we knew we were different from one another and we only knew about each other in stories. "I guess not all of us." I shrugged modestly. He chuckled, and we looked out into the night in silence.
I looked at Frodo sadly, this burden that was put on him was one that no one should ever have to have. Knowing that the ring had driven thousands of people mad made me extra worried for him. I couldn't fathom the worries he was having, and I would help him get the ring out of Middle Earth if I would die trying. "You love the ring bearer don't you." Legolas observed. "I do, more than anything." I said looking at Frodo sleeping. "I'm just worried that he will be hurt because of the burden he carries. There are so many terrible people in this world. Frodo wouldn't hurt anyone." tears were shining in my eyes. We had been away from the Shire for a whole year. Legolas nodded as he listened to what I told him. "I must agree with you, there are cruel people. The best we can do is to not let them influence us. Good always overpowers evil."
Legolas's words assured me. I never thought I would make friends with an elf. He was wise after all he's seen in his thousands of years like Arwen. I was earnestly hoping that we would be able to make it through the mountain.
My dreams tonight were about an Elven city that had glowing trees and a peaceful atmosphere. Frodo and I were talking and holding hands, and we were at peace. Our bond was getting stronger.
Sunrise came and we continued our trek down the mountain. We were walking through the fabled Misty Mountains, where Bilbo had gone on his unexpected journey.
