/ Will POV /

I thought pain was the worst thing in life, but I found out waiting and watching the girl you love, dying from an attack that you could've prevented was much worse. Watching Tessa's life slowly drain out of her was slowly driving me insane.

The what if's and should've, would've, could haves, were eating my conscience away. I was torturing myself thinking about what I could've done to save Tessa.

"Move boy, we need to inspect the shape-changer."

I jumped. Not hearing the Silent Brothers enter, I wasn't expecting their voices in my head. I moved to let them see Tessa. Brother Zachariah came over and set his hand on my shoulder. He spoke in my mind.

"Will, you are hurt, let me tend to your wounds, Tessa wouldn't want you hurting yourself any longer."

"Ok, Jem."

I'm the only person who calls Jem by his birth name besides Tessa. I knew he wouldn't pass up an opportunity to see Tessa, even if Tessa couldn't see him.

I go and lay on my stomach, knowing fully well that Jem was indicating to the shrapnel still in my back from the attack.

---- 2 hours later ------

Jem had dug out 12 pieces of glass already, he said that wasn't even half of the amount. I grit my teeth as Jem pokes around with a pair of tweezers, extracting another but of glass. I wouldn't take any pain relieving runes because Tessa couldn't take any, and I knew she was hurting so I wanted to share her pain.

"Ok, Will I think I am just about done."

Oh yeah where have I heard that before? 2 hours earlier, I'm not falling for that again. Jem just says that to keep me from despairing. Its not working very well.
