Chapter 24

//Tessa POV//

We arrived in the cover of night. The house looked quite unspectacular, meant to blend in. It was one amongst several similar houses, all close together. Cecily was almost drifting into unconsciousness when we pulled up. I shook her gently to rouse her. We took our bags into the house where I unlocked the door with the key Will gave me.

The whole house wasn't that big. A bedroom with two narrow beds and a main room with a small privy off it.

There is a hidden room through the closet in your bedroom. Hide there if you come under attack. I will bring food and water for both of you once a day.

"Won't you be followed and have us found out?" Cecily piped up.

Silent Brothers have ways of traveling without being tracked, even by greater demons.

"How did you and Will happen upon this place?" I asked. I never could hold myself back from asking questions.

Magnus Bane informed us of it in case we needed a respite from a chase.

Cecily poked around the cramped rooms, as if she was searching for something.

"Ah ha! I found the secret door," she squealed.

"Hush, Cece. We will only use it if we are under attack. It is not a play thing," I lightly scolded her. I know Cece is still quite young. She still needs some direction in her life, even if Charlotte isn't here.

I will leave you to sort everything out. I will come tomorrow with sustenance. Goodbye for now, Miss Gray.

It stings that Jem could not rightfully refer to me as Tessa. We were engaged at a time. A wonderful time, but I wouldn't give up Will for the world.

"How long do we have to be here?" Cece's voice pipes up from behind me.

"Until Jem sees fit that it's safe enough for our return."

"Well, when will that be?" Cecily insisted, asking her question again.

"I haven't the faintest idea."
