To make a sentence with past tense, we need to add particles in the place of -다 verb particle. These particles are:
                              > 았어요
> 었어요
> 였어요
                              Explanation:
                              1) If a verb (after removal of -다) ends with ㅏ or ㅗ , we add 았요 to it.
                              Result:
가 + 았어요 = 갔어요 = went
자 + 았어요 = 잤어요 = slept
보 + 았어요 = 봤어요 = saw
                              2) If a verb (after removal of -다) ends with any other vowel or consonant except ㅏ or ㅗ , we add 었요.
                              Result:
먹 + 었요 = 먹었요 = ate
읽 + 었요 = 읽었요 = read (past tense)
                              3) If a verb (after removal of -다) is 하 , we add 여요. Remember that this rule is only used for 하다.
                              Result:
하 + 였요 = 하였요 → 했어요 = did
