This is confusing part for most of the learners out there. So I'll just put it in the beginning of this book.
There are two uses of this alphabet. One of them is 'ng' sound that is used just like other alphabets. Not something to worry about.
1) Silent:
If a word starts with a vowel sound, the vowel must have ㅇbefore it. When ㅇ is placed before a vowel, its silent.
Example: 우유 (milk)
Pronounced as u(ㅜ) yu(ㅠ)
Another example: 아이 (baby)
Pronounced as a(ㅏ) ee(ㅣ)
You can NOT write it likeㅏㅣor ㅜㅠ. That is wrong. You have to put ㅇ before each vowel.
2) ng sound:
Just a regular sound. Try looking at these examples I got for you.
Examples:
항상 (always)
Pronounced as 'hang sang'
양 (Sheep)
Pronounced as 'yang'
빵 (bread)
Pronounced as 'ppang'
3) No need of ㅇ:
Example: 바나나(banana)
The vowel is not alone. It has a consonant before it. Therefore, we don't need ㅇ to fill the space because there is no space hahaha.
