You sighed, the day had been slow. You were slouched on your throne, your crown tipped over your head lazily and your hair slightly covering your eyes. Your cape had become itchy so it was strung over the back of the tall and regal seat. You picked at the skin by your nails, bored. Your head advisor was rambling on and on about how you needed to be wed soon, per usual. He had been trying to court you off for weeks on end, and every time he would talk about the same prince from L'manburg.

He was tall, strong, smart, a natural born leader, had fluffy hair and deep doe-brown eyes, they would say. Everything a queen would want, right? Well, no. Most women these days, including you, wanted to be more independent. After Queen Nihachu had married one of her guards, Puffy, things had begun to change. When Puffy, or as she prefers it, Captain Puffy, and her spouse Niki had announced that they wanted to wed, people began to riot. Nobody wanted things to change.

They fought (in court) for their right to marry and won, obviously. They were happy. Prince Will, her original groom-to-be was the most excited for them. A few people ended up getting fired here and there, but otherwise, nothing inside of the palace walls had happened that was directly against the two Queens.

You could smell the gross, wrinkly, old, coffee-stained paper that would mark them as 'best friends' in the far future.

You craved something like what they had, but a bit different. You didn't care if it was with a man or a woman (or anything in between), you just wanted something new. You wanted adventure, freedom. Ever since your parents had died (cliche, I know) your life was a chore. It already was before then, but now you had three times the royal duties as you did when they were still alive. You hated being a ruler, you felt like a tyrant. Like there was too many things for just you to decide. You knew no one (or even two, for that matter) person should hold that much power on their own.

"Are you even listening to me, princess?" Vincent asked. You mentally gagged at the title.

"No, not really, " You replied, annoyance dripping off of your tone, "Your voice is boring."

He gave you a dirty look and turned around to face the stairs.

"You need to be wed, Lady (Y/N)."

"No, I don't."

He looked at you as if you had just threatened to murder someone.

"Every Queen needs a King."

"I don't need a King, " You replied, being pushed farther to the edge each passing second.

"Oh, you don't? You don't need a king, now do you? You're under their influence aren't you?"

"Who's influence exactly?"

"Those dy-"

"Don't you fucking dare say it, Vincent." You snapped, yet your words remained smooth. Your were now sitting up. The harsh tone sent him a message, one that told him that if he went against your orders he would regret it.

He didn't say a word, but he did challenge your gaze.

"You're dismissed." You told him.

"I'm what?"

"YOU ARE DISMISSED!" You said, slamming your fist on the armrest of your throne and standing up, causing the advisor to flinch.

He mumbled something, incoherent to you. You didn't really care what he was saying at this point, you just needed some time to cool off.

"The rest of you are as well." You said with a wave of a hand as you sunk back into your chair.

"But ma'am, it may be dangerous." Sir Eret said, his intentions clear. He just wanted you to be safe.

You looked at him with pleading eyes, and he seemed to get the message. He called over the rest of the guards and spoke to them altogether.

"Stay safe, your Majesty." Dame Minx called out as they left.

You let your muscles relax now that you were finally alone. You had been asking your guards to leave when you were stressed quite a bit lately, and they were starting to become worried for you. You didn't blame them, it was their job to keep you safe, after all.

Despite the lack of protection when your knights were away, you felt safer, in a way. You knew that it was better for you to get some time for yourself. You had time to forget your duties and pretend like there was no Queens and Kings. Pretend as if people could just be and do whatever they want.

You heard something shuffling behind your throne, but you paid it no mind. Your castle was prone to field mice, as you had a large field full of flowers just outside of the main walls.

Soon, however, cold metal was placed against your neck.

"Any last words, Princess?"
