The rabbit was kicking its legs, squeaking rapidly. The dagger had it pinned to the ground. The knife was longer than its body, going through it's back and into the dirt. The fur around the blade quickly went from a light brown to a darker, nearly red, brown.
"Good job," Technoblade said from behind you, "That was a lucky hit."
"I..." You had never killed anything before, only expecting to injure a much larger opponent. Instead, a now still rabbit was under your hand.
"That gives us something to cook." He spoke again, stepping around to crouch next to you.
"You alright?"
"Um. Yeah." You let go of your knife and stood, brushing off the shaky feeling that was left behind. It was oddly neausiating to kill something, even if it was just a rabbit. Something would probably end up dying tonight for food either way, but you didn't expect to be the one to kill it.
You could see Techno carrying the dead animal over to the fire pit. Along with your dagger, which was tucked away under his arm. One wrong move and he would end up with a nasty scar on his bicep.
But still, he carefully moved the carcass into one arm and set the knife down next to a log without injury. The fire was going strong next to him.
Forcing yourself to overcome a bit of the shock, you cleared your throat.
"That was smooth."
"Yeah, I'm used to having to do this. Though, admittedly, it's easier to transport a bloody arrow than a dagger."
"I'm sure."
You stood in silence for a moment, taking the precious time to calm yourself.
Techno gave you a short look of concern, but proceeded on with... 'preparing' the rabbit. You turned away, desperate to preoccupy your mind and body. That. Was. Disgusting.
You would have to get used to killing things. And you hated that.
It was new, unusual. The desperation the small animal portrayed was horrifying. Just the thought of what it must have been feeling gave you chills. But, it was necessary. You did have a choice in this.
Either you killed and survived, or you didn't and you died. Life or death between you and an animal, and you would have to be the priority.
You didn't have a choice.
As you continued to smooth out the bottom of the tent, you told yourself that. You didn't expect killing something so small to affect you so much. Maybe it was the way the fur around the wounds darkened, or maybe it was the panic in it's beady eyes that you wished you hadn't looked into. Or maybe it was the way it's legs moved so rapidly in desperation to get away, or the screams of pain before it died.
Or maybe it was everything combined.
Whatever it was, it wouldn't leave your head.
"Hey, Y/N."
You turned to face the man speaking to you.
"You've been smoothing that cloth for a while now. You alright?"
That's when you realized that the sun was no longer in the middle of the sky, instead resting right above the treeline. The beginning of the sunset was a nice view.
Vibrant purples and oranges didn't quite paint the sky, but were noticeable behind the sparse clouds. The sun was bright, it almost hurt just looking in its direction.
"The food's ready."
And, the first time you were distracted from the repetitive scene was interrupted, the vision back in full force.
You would have to get over this. You couldn't dwell on one rabbit forever- especially if you were going to take down the monarchy. There would have to be a lot of blood on your hands.
The kind of blood that you couldn't wash off.
But, surely, once it got going you would get used to it. I mean, how would Techno have this job if you just never got used to it. It would be illogical, to do something as silly as putting yourself in a loop of mental peril and self-pity just to kill a few monarchs and take down the government.
.....right?
