Disclaimer: I don't know anything about assassination, and nothing in the chapters are based on real life attempts. The future chapters mention murder/ blood.
☆Deathbringer☆
"Maybe, if he can kill Vengeance or Slaughter." Her lips, shining, a shade of brilliant red, glowing in the darkness. From wine of blood, nobody knows. Perhaps both. That would make even more sense. "Then I'll let him go with you."
Muffled voices, hoarse whispers from Mother. "Please, he's only a boy. You told he you had-- you had a daughter his age. Please, please...You helped me break ties with them, holding him like this is just cruel...Battlewinner..."
"And I would have let you, if he didn't exist. But he does! And that boy has a talent nobody can deny-- a talent for killing. I wouldn't be surprised if he was listening to our conversation just now. It will be a shame to let his talent to go waste, and that's all I'm asking for, it's very simple! A successful mission."
"Murder! From Deathbringer!" Mother is sobbing. "No.. Let me do it-- please."
Everything is puzzling with Mother. She would cry at Battlewinner's feet at one second and stab her with a dagger in another. She play with people's emotions, so much that it is hard to know if what she says is real and what is not.
Battlewinner's voice is cold in return. "Do you think I have time to hear you play weak? You were one of my best agents, and I'm very disappointed in you. The boy is all I want. If he cannot perform a single murder, I will place a bullet through his head myself. If he can, I will let him go with you to kill the man. And then both of you will be free from us."
He silently slips away.
Vengeance and Slaughter. His two roommates-- it hasn't been long since he realized Slaughter would be easier to kill. Slaughter is a heavy sleeper, and he's weaker than Vengeance, wouldn't have the quick wits to strike back if he does wake up. Surrounded by darkness, he silently walks away from the door and to his room.
He finds Slaughter awake, Morrowseer by his side.
Damn you, he thinks as he hides the pocketknife behind him. He can tell from Slaughter's expression that he has been warned. Morrowseer gives him a dry smile-- an expression that he hates-- and hisses, "Here comes the assassin."
Vengeance is awake as well, sitting on the upper bunk, his eyes narrowed. "Deathbringer, what is this about?"
Convince them. His voice is smooth, and he's talking over his racing heart with charming words. "What are you guys awake for? I went to get a drink from the kitchen."
Slaughter sneers. "Morrowseer tells me you plan to kill me. Because you-- you have to kill one of us if you want to go with your mom."
Morrowseer ruining everything. He looks at Deathbringer with lazy eyes, a look that expects him to convince Slaughter otherwise. "Is it true?"
Great. Three to one, although nobody knew if Morrowseer would join the fight. Nobody knew anything about stupid Morrowseer.
"Yeah, it's true. But I'm not going to do it," he says smoothly, looking at Slaughter straight in the eye. He may be able to convince him to get his guard down, and make more time for himself. "I don't know what Morrowseer has told you, but I'm not going to kill you."
Slaughter's stupid sneer again. It won't come off. "Yeah, like that's true."
He sighs, like he is explaining something to a five-year-old. He can't convince Slaughter-- that much is clear-- that he thinks of him as a friend, because all of them know that every one of them would stab each other to death if it means one compliment from Battlewinner. "Think about it logically. If I killed you, I would have to go with that stupid woman that I have to call mother. Why should I? I'll be able to work as an assassin for the rest of my life. Everyone knows I'm the best in this group, so why should I leave?"
