What he thought was only going to take a few minutes instead turned into an hour. Still laying on his bed as he faced the ceiling, Mallix sat up surprised that Lain hadn't entered their bedroom yet. Despite it still being a youthful night, Mallix wasn't expecting Lain to stay out as late as she did.
Getting up from his place in bed the lean man felt a strange feeling growing inside of him. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up and his veins made his hands clench.
With his brows furrowed over the confusion to his sudden behavior the man walked over to his window suddenly. It was like it was calling out for him to take a look. Examining his property closely, Mallix couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. Seeing how the leaves danced while the breeze brushed through them only made him raise an eyebrow, it looked like any other typical night.
Shutting his window as he shook the strange feeling of uncertainty off of him, Mallix exited his bedroom. "Lain?" He called out.
"In here babe."
Following the sound of her voice, Mallix was lead up the stairs to the fourth floor of his home where he found Lain with her feet kicked up upon the couch as she laid tiredly with her hair in her face.
"Are you alright?" He asked.
"Yeah, just thinking."
"Well I think you look like you're exhausted. Why're you laying up here? I was waiting for you in our room."
"You were?" She said apologetically as she sat up. "Sorry. I would've been back if I knew you were waiting for me...um, why exactly were you waiting for me?" She scratched the top of her head.
"Uh..." Mallix looked lost as his eyes wandered the room, "just cause." He shrugged trying to brush past it, but it wasn't hard for his wife to see past his nonchalant act. After having been married for what felt like an eternity at this point, it was safe to say she knew her husband well.
"What is it Mallix?" She asked with a knowing look.
"It's nothing babe. I was just doing some thinking of my own."
"Is it anything you'd want to talk about?" She asked with a warm smile.
No matter how busy she was or how stressed she became, Mallix knew she was always there for him. Even in his lowest times, she was a reliable shoulder that he would always have to be able to lean upon.
"You know actually it is..." the tips of his lips raised. The hairs sticking up at the back of his neck were settling as butterflies took over his stomach.
As Lain pulled Mallix down besides her, she got comfortable before grabbing hold of her husbands hands waiting to hear what he had to say. With eager eyes the woman waited while Mallix began breathing heavily to collect himself.
"James was um...," he cleared his throat harshly. Mallix had only just begun but already he could feel that his throat was dry and rough, he longed for a drink. "He, um...was talking to me about well our lives and-"
"Wait. Why was James talking about our lives?"
"Thats uh...you see...it's...that's not the point. Anyways what he was getting at was that I should just tell you that..." while Mallix was stuttering and panicking to get his point across a rather odd noise, almost like someone smashing something, came from outside their window.
Even though they were up at the top floor of the house, the vampires within could easily hear the loud thump that shook their land. Without even speaking a word, the couple jumped from their seats as they darted towards the staircase putting their current conversation on pause for now.
