"Are you ready?" Lain asked her husband as they stood quietly outside of Faye's bedroom door.
"Well I'd rather be doing this than handling those teens." He said with little confidence. "So I guess I am."
Giving Mallix a smile of encouragement, Lain turned to the door before giving it a proper knock. From inside they could barely hear any noise. It seemed like the room was empty by its level of silence.
"Faye?" Lain called out. "Can we come in?"
It had only been an hour since their arrival back to the house after the unfortunate end to their nice outing, but they hoped that it had been enough time for the young girl on the opposite side of the door to recollect herself.
"We just want to make sure your doing alright." Mallix added when the only response they got was still air.
"I'm okay." They heard Faye say weakly from within the room, but despite her words, they could hear from her sad tone that the girl was anything but okay.
"Faye please." Lain said hopeful. "Can we just come in?"
They could hear a soft scurry in footsteps before her door opened ever so slightly.
Peering in, they could only see half of her face. But the half that they could see was enough. Her eyes were red shot and her cheeks had deep pink stains going all the way down to her chin.
"Can I help you?" Faye asked. Her voice was tender and cracked.
It was heartbreaking to see the girl in front of them so broken.
"What's the matter Faye?" Mallix asked as he stepped closer attempting to enter the room, but as soon as the girl witnessed his attempt she was quick to make the small crack in her door even smaller.
"Nothing." She assured. "Nothings wrong."
"We know that's not true. Are you sure you don't want to talk about it?" Lain asked.
"Positive. Thanks again." As she went to shut the door, Mallix just couldn't bear to see Faye in the condition she was in. Rather than letting the door come to a close, he instead stuck his shoe through the crack.
In her panic Faye shot her puffy eyes up into his. "Please Faye, this will only take a minute." He said knowing well that was a lie.
Her eyes began to quiver as she stared into his kind eyes. Not only that but as Lain stepped besides him, laying her hand in his, the girl felt intimidated by the couple only inches away from her.
Slowly Lain extended her hand that was in Mallix's out towards her. But for as scary as her invitation seemed, her hand was encouraging. It had a warmth to it as Faye reached out almost in a trance to grab the woman's hand.
Letting Lain push her door open wide enough for them to enter, Mallix was sure to shut it behind them to give them all the privacy they desired.
It seemed like forever since they had seen this room.
The bright wooden furniture in addition to the white bedsheet was drastically different from their dark bedroom. The energy in this room was much more uplifting and calm. But for as welcoming and open as this room felt, it had a black hole to it.
There was something missing.
Something that was necessary, but neither of the couple could seem to put their finger on it.
As Lain lead Faye over to her large bed, the couple sandwiched the small girl between them. As Mallix placed a hand upon her shoulder, the girl felt trapped.
