Grian was grinding for sand, repeating the process of digging up sand at an absurd rate, managing to fill a shulker box after about 15 minutes of digging. He was planning on going to the end at some point, but the only reason he would go was for elytra, and his wings were good enough for that, and they didn't need mending. But if he crashed it would hurt a lot more than just breaking elytra.
His communicator buzzed, and he took a break from mining sand to check it, trying not to let sand get in the gaps, as it was one of the things Xisuma had given to him and he didn't want to break it in the first week or something.
Dang. He forgot they were supposed to meet by the campfire that evening.
To be honest he didn't notice it getting so dark, but he hastily flew over to the groundwork for his mega-base, dumping the shulker boxes down, flying high then dropping quickly to get the sand off his jumper, finding it safe to fly now that most of the hermits had elytra and flying was a regular occurrence, so he wasn't the odd one out.
He flew towards the coordinates Xisuma posted in chat, landing and finishing the last 100 blocks or so on foot, going towards the light presumably from the campfire.
He winced slightly when he realised he was the last one there, slipping onto a log next to Mumbo, noticing a packet of marshmallows next to Xisuma.
"Sorry, I was grinding for sand and didn't notice the time, Grian explained apologetically, fiddling with a loose thread of his jumper.
"Don't worry about it - how are you finding it here?" Grian shrugged, grinning.
"It's pretty nice - there's so many new blocks like concrete and there's so many new mobs like dolphins, fish and phantoms!"
"You shouldn't be excited about the last one," Mumbo warned, laughing as Grian shrugged. Xisuma pulled open the packet of marshmallows, handing them around the circle to let all the hermits take one.
"So for those who don't know or don't remember what this is," Xisuma started, holding his pointy stick over the fire to roast the marshmallow. "I'm mainly talking to Stress, Zedaph and Grian here - at the start of every season, around a week in normally, we basically have a big nostalgia fest and share stories about the previous season." Grian nodded, poking his marshmallow and eating it despite it being hardly cooked.
Blame it smelling too nice.
"Zedaph, do you want to start?" Tango asked, and Zedaph nodded, an excited grin creeping across his face.
"Shall I start with the gameshow or with Wormman?" he asked, a glint in his eyes.
"Who's Wormman?" Grian asked, and out of the corner of his eye Doc was sniggering quietly.
"He's a superhero that's definitely not Zedaph," Tango explained, pushing him teasingly.
"Not so sure about his sidekick though," Xisuma pointed out, and Zedaph did look slightly guilty.
"Hey - it's not my- I mean his fault that EX tricked him," Zedaph argued, and an idea suddenly came to Grian and he started smiling.
"If we blame anyone, blame me for making the kill Doc machine," Doc said, rolling his eyes.
"Has he come to this world?" Joe asked, and Xisuma shrugged.
"Possibly," he said, and Grian didn't know entirely what they were talking about. He laughed when Zedaph mentioned the gameshow, about sheep of all things before they moved on, and while he didn't contribute much to the conversation he found the stories funny, about the NHO and the chaos that ensured.
But he could make more chaos.
"What about you Grian, do you have any stories?" Cleo asked after a couple of hours, and the Hermits started looking at him curiously. He hesitated for a second before realising there wasn't much point in hiding it, and he smiled slightly.
"Sure, I have a story," he began, smiling slightly. "This is a story of friendship and betrayal, or empires rising and falling, a story of war. Ok maybe that's an exaggeration but it sounds more exciting like that." The hermits laughed, giving him the confidence to carry on telling the story.
"So basically I'd just joined a server called Evo, and I was bored so I built an empire! It was very humbly called the Grian empire, and I had a friend from High School called Taurtis and I missed him, so I summoned him. Very simple really. And I asked him to join my empire. He said no - which I did bring on myself really, and made a republic called the Taurtis republic. He then declared war by stealing a pumpkin. The End."
"What happened in the war?" Mumbo asked, and Grian laughed.
"He declared war then neither of us did anything more." Grian smiled at the fond memory, but it faded slightly when he remembered that Taurtis wasn't there, and he didn't know where he was.
"Did you do anything else on that server?" False asked, and a mischievous glint came into his eyes.
"There was the time where I elected my friend for mayor and didn't tell him," Grian said, and it was at that moment that Xisuma realised there was a very high chance that Grian was going to cause chaos.
"You like pranks?" Ren asked, and Grian nodded, grinning mischievously. "I like him," Ren said, raising his hand for a high-five that Grian returned.
A few hours passed when Grian noticed the time, checking his communicator and sighing when he realised it said 1:45am.
"It's pretty late," Mumbo noted, peering over Grian's shoulder.
"I think we should probably head back to our bases," Xisuma said, and a few tired hermits mumbled in agreement. Grian grabbed a blanket, folding it and handing it to Xisuma, because he was the one who'd brought all the supplies, including the now-empty packet of marshmallows.
Once they'd packed up, the majority of the Hermits took off with their elytra, and Grian self-consciously started to open his wings, conscious that Xisuma was watching him.
"Do you think you're going to get an elytra this season?" Xisuma asked, and Grian shrugged.
"Maybe, maybe not. I'll probably try it out at some point," he said as Xisuma equipped his elytra, and took off. Grian slowly started gliding towards his base, landing on the concrete and clambering into his bed.
