I'm sitting on the ground, looking around. The only thing I see are four huge walls, each with an opening in the middle. I can't see what's behind those walls.
I've been here for a few hours now. They call it the 'Glade'.
And I'm the only girl here - great.
"Hey Greenie! Go make yourself useful!" a boy shouts. I haven't seen him before.
"Gally, she just arrived here. Calm down and go make yourself useful!" Alby, probably the olderst 'Glader' here answers when he walks by. Is he the leader? I don't know, he acts like it.
I roll my eyes and get up. Where to go?
I look at one of the walls again and decide to take a look.
What would be behind those things?
I'm getting closer and closer, I can almost see what is-
The next moment someone pushes me. I lose my balance and fall.
"Greenie, hasn't Alby told you yet?" It's the same boy as a few minutes ago. What was his name again? Gally?
"What? That you get pushed to the ground by some random dude when you're another twenty-five feet away from whatever is behind those walls?"
"You'll know soon. But for now you should know you're not allowed to go beyond those walls, or.."
"Or what?" I ask.
"Or you risk your shucking life, Greenie."
"Who are you to decide what I'm allowed to do and what I'm not allowed to do? Who are you anyway? My boss?"
The boy starts laughing.
"Haha, no. But you can call me captain Gally, if you want."
I roll my eyes again. "Since you pushed me, are you gonna help me back up again, or what?"
"Seriously?" Gally asks but then offers me his hand.
I grin and ignore his hand, helping myself to my feet. "Thanks anyway, captain Gally," I laugh and walk away.
"Greenie."
I turn around. Why am I actually listening to 'Greenie'? My name is Y/N, not 'Greenie'.
Gally is standing only a few feet away from me.
"What?" I ask.
"I wanted to apologize," he says.
I look at him, not trusting him at all. "Hmm.."
"Oh come on Greenie-"
"Stop calling me 'Greenie'!" I interrupt him. "I'm not even green!"
He sighs. "Good that."
He offers me a hand, and I shake it. A shock of electricity goes through me. "Okay."
Then Gally walks away. I watch him walking toward the rest of the Builders, wondering what that feeling of a few seconds ago was.
"Hey, Gree- ehh, Y/N," one of the boys whispers while having dinner. I believe his name is Newt. He's one of the only people that have been a bit nice to me so far.
"Eh, Newt was it, right?" I ask just to be sure.
The boy nods. "That's bloody right."
He takes a bite of his sandwich. "Anyways, I think Gally likes you."
"What?" I say, spitting out a sip of water.
Newt laughs a bit about my response, then continues. "Don't get me wrong - he's not really the nicest person to any of us, but I noticed he's acting even stranger with you. Plus, he never apologizes - he did to you."
"W-what?" I repeat, not believing what this boy just told me. "How do you even know he apologized?"
"I'm second in command," he explains. "So when Alby's not here - which is bloody hard since we're bloody trapped here between those four bloody walls, surrounded by a bloody ever changing Maze with bloody Grievers, but for example when he's sick or something - I'm the 'leader'. But even when Alby's here himself I still have to, well, watch everything, you know. So that's how I noticed."
I nod. "I get it."
"Good that. And again, Gally has been acting bloody strange since you arrived here so you could say I'm sure he bloody likes you."
He really says 'bloody' a lot, I think by myself.
I'm staring at my sandwich, feeling confused.
Newt notices and laughs. "Come on Y/N, eat your bloody sandwich before I do."
I laugh a bit and take a bite.
After dinner, the Gladers decided to make a fire and play a game. We're playing Truth or Dare - a game that I hate right now. I just arrived here today, I don't know anyone here, and they expect me to play a game with them.
I'm talking to Newt because, well, apparently nobody chooses me - something I didn't expect because I had expected them to be curious about the new 'Greenie'. On the other hand, what did I have to tell? I don't remember anything, how can I tell the 'Truth'?
"So you really think.." I whisper to Newt. " Gally likes me? And do I like him?"
Newt takes a bite of his roasted marshmallows and nods. He is about to say something when we hear his name.
"Newt: Truth or Dare?" Chuck, the youngest Glader asks.
"Truth," Newt answers after thinking for a few seconds.
"How did you get your limp?"
I see Newt getting nervous, his face is pale now. He seems to notice it himself as well, because he answers quickly. "I fell over while running when running away from a Griever, when I was a Runner."
"O..kay," the litte boy answers.
I can see Newt didn't tell us the truth, but I'm sure he has a good reason for that.
"Okay," Newt starts. "Gally: Truth or Dare?"
I look at him, scared. "Newt, what the-"
"There's only one way to find out," he winks at me.
"Dare," Gally answers.
"Good," Newt says. "Kiss Y/N."
"What?! No way!"
"You chose Dare," Newt laughs.
Gally stands up, and starts walking in my direction. "Good. But only because Newt-" he looks at Newt, angry, "-made me do this. Get it?"
I nod. "I wouldn't be happy with it myself, either," I say. "You haven't even been nice to me, so why would I want to kiss you? Now shut your hole, as you guys seem to call it, and-"
I can't even finish because I suddenly feel his lips on mine. That same feeling of earlier today goes through my whole body, and it feels like fireworks explode in my stomach.
Then our kiss ends, and Gally goes back to his place, with the rest of the Builders.
"And?" Newt asks.
I can't answer. I have to act normal - I can't let Gally, or anyone else here know about this. "I'll tell you later," I say. The boy nods.
The next day, after breakfast, Newt calls my name.
"Hi Newt, what's up?" I ask.
He smiles a bit. "You bloody promised me to tell me about, you know what."
"Oh, ehh, yeah.. So.." I explain the whole thing, not even knowing myself what all those feelings of yesterday meant.
"I think you like him," Newt grins. How does he know?
"Okay.. But what about Gally? I don't know what he felt. Probably nothing. I don't even want to like him, he's mean!"
Newt, I'm starting to see him as a friend, gives me a little comforting smile and tells me that I should give it a chance - everyone has a soft side.
Seriously, how does he know all this?
Today is my first day at work, but they'll have to find out what I'm good at, so I'll try a different job every day until I tried everthing. Newt made me start with the Builders the first day, because of Gally.
"Thanks, Newt," I say and give him a friendly hug.
"Greenie," Gally says when I arrive at the Builders's part of the Glade.
I look at him, warning. "My name is Y/N."
"Oh, yeah, sorry. Y/N. I'm your Keeper for today. So I'll tell you what to do. Good that?"
'Good that'? What does that even mean? I've heard it a lot since I came here, and I'm starting to believe that it's a term of agreement. I nod. "Good that."
I'm trying my best, but nothing I do seems to work out. I guess I won't be a Builder.
"Y/N. I want to talk to you for a second," Gally shouts.
"Okay, captain Gally!" I answer in a sarcastic voice, put my hammer down and start walking in the Keeper's direction.
"Okay, I need to talk to you about something." He looks me straight in the eyes. Don't drown, Y/N, don't, I tell myself. "And you need to be honest."
I nod.
"So, umm.." he starts, suddenly looking so insecure. Shy. Maybe even scared. "I don't know what it is, Gree- eh, Y/N, but since you showed up in the Box, I've felt so.. Weird. And well, yesterday.. With that stupid Dare.. And I had to kiss you.. And.. I don't know.. I feel so weird.."
"What did you feel?" I manage to ask - don't ask me how.
"I felt.. A kind of.. Butterflies? I hate butterflies. But I don't know, it also felt good at the same time. I must admit that I'm confused, or maybe even scared-"
"Umm, Gally?"
"Yeah?"
"I think I feel the same.."
"Y-you do?"
I nod, and put my hand on his shoulder. It's barely visible, but I see him moving a bit. "What did you feel?"
He tells me, and it sounds like what I had described as the electricity thingy.
"So I like you?" Gally asks, in a quite normal voice now.
"I guess.."
"Kiss me."
I look up, meeting his eyes again. "What?"
"Kiss me," he repeats, and starts smiling, even laughing a bit. "I'm your Keeper today, you have to do what I say."
"Gally, you know how I feel but.. And don't get me wrong, but, you seem so.. Mean sometimes.. I don't like it when you're acting like that."
He nods. "I'm sorry. It's just.. Everything here in this shuck Glade. But if you give me a chance, I'll do my best to be nicer. To everyone."
I smile a bit. "Good that."
"Already using our words huh?" the boy laughs. I laugh along with him.
"Y/N?" he asks then, staring into my eyes again, and I can't help but stare back.
"Yeah?" I ask, but he doesn't say anything. I only notice his head coming closer to mine, and the next moment we're kissing.
