"Hi, Y/N," Thomas says when he walks up to me and hugs me.
"Hey," I sigh. "How are you?"
"I've been better," he answers. "You?"
"Same."
We both sit down on the ground, and it's quiet for a while.
"Thomas, you know I don't blame you, right?" I say after a few minutes. "He asked - no, demanded you to do it. You helped him, Thomas. You put him out of his misery."
"'Kill me. If you've ever been my friend, Kill me,'" he quotes the note Newt had given to him before we had left him in the Berg. "'Please, Tommy. Please..'" Then he starts crying. So do I. We just sit there, on the ground of what WICKED had called 'Paradise'. But it's no 'Paradise' without our friend. Without Newt. We've lost our Glue.
"I can't believe he isn't with us anymore," I whisper. "His story.. The Flare.. It all happened so fast.."
"I know, Y/N.. I know.. I miss him too."
"Newt and I.. We had a fight before we left the Berg. And when we got back, he was gone.. And at the Crank Palace.. I never got the chance to say I'm sorry. I was stupid, Thomas. I was so, so stupid. I was a bad friend. I didn't want to be.."
"Shh," my friend comforts me. "You've always been a great friend. To Newt.. To all of us. You just wanted to protect him.."
"Yeah, but I never got the chance to explain."
"I'm sure that he knew in his heart that you didn't mean to hurt him," Thomas says. "I know how important he was to you. And so did he."
I don't say anything, I just think of some memories of Newt.

I've been awake for a few hours now, after being in a coma for days. I hear people talk outside the room. One of them is one of the Med-jacks that took care of me when I was asleep. The other voice I don't recognize. It sounds.. British?
Then a boy walks into my room.
"Hi?" I say. "Who are you?"
"Name's Newt, Greenie," he says, and shakes my hand.
"Y/N," I say. It's the only thing I can remember.
Newt, apparently the 'second in command', tells me about the Glade. About how they still have no idea who put us here. The only thing they know is that the 'Beetle Blades' are here to spy on us, record us so that these 'Creators' can watch us.
He tells me how awful the Grievers are.
"Grievers?" I ask.
"Grievers," Newt says. "They live in the Maze. That's why we have those huge Doors - to protect ourselves. The Doors close every night. That's why the Runners have to be fast: if they don't make it back before the Doors close, they're stuck in the bloody Maze for the night. And no one has ever survived a night in the Maze."
He tells me about the Runners, how they've been running the Maze for two years, hoping to find a way out.
"Well, that's enough information for now, I'll let you get some rest before you'll get a bloody headache of all this info. I'll give you the tour around the Glade after dinner - if you feel good enough, of course," Newt says.
"Okay. Thanks, Newt," I say.
Newt smiles, then leaves the room.

Tears are streaming down my face.
Newt, the second in command. The boy who had always been friendly. Always. He's been through a lot, but almost nobody knows about it. All this pain.. And it only made him kind.
He seemed totally okay from the inside, but now I know that that was all an act. A mask.
A few days ago, Thomas told me about how Newt got his limp. Everyone always thought he had been stung by a Griever when he was a Runner. Truth is, he was a deeply unhappy person. He hated the Maze so much that he decided to end it all. So he climbed one of the walls, and jumped right off.
But he survived.

"Thomas," I say, my voice cracking. "Why the shuck wasn't Newt immune, like us?"
"I don't know, Y/N.. I don't know.."

"The following people are not immune to the Flare.." the Rat Man says. ".. Newt.."
I look up. What? He must be kidding me. He must be. Newt has to be immune. He can't be a Crank. We've already lost so many Gladers.. We can't lose him too. Our Glue..
I am immune. So are my other friends, Thomas and Minho. A few other Gladers. And some girls from Group B.
But all I can think about is Newt.. My world has fallen apart.

"Newt.." Thomas says. "You're being missed here, shank. It's no paradise without you."
I nod, moving a bit more toward Thomas, who puts his arms around me to comfort me.
Newt once said, "The important thing is that we all have each other. We're all in this together."
And he was right. We are all in this together. We all miss Newt. But we do have each other.
And I know Newt in my heart that would've wanted that - that we're all here for each other, like we were back in the Glade.

Thomas and I spend the rest of the day just sitting. Crying, thinking and talking about our friend.

"Great. We're all bloody inspired."
