dakota's mask lifted, covering her face as she watched the fight break out. tony was on top of bucky when steve's shield hit him, distracting him from his punches. tony then shouldered steve to the floor, shackling his ankles with a blast. a rocket shot out of tony's arm, and a fireball exploded.

"did you know?" kodie asked, turning to look at hazel. "did you know, when we met, that you'd killed my grandparents?"

hazel shook her head. "they.. must've wiped my memory. i didn't remember any of it." she said. "i couldn't even remember bucky, at first. i promise you.. i've never lied to you about any of this."

dakota nodded, her jaw still clenched slightly under her suit. "i'm sorry about the other soldiers." she said.

hazel nodded in response, her face also solemn. "i'm sorry i attacked you earlier."

"i'm not happy with how this looks." dakota said. "but the person in that video.. that wasn't you. neither was the person who attacked me. maybe this hasn't been bucky, either."

"are we good?" hazel asked, holding her shield to her side.

dakota nodded. "we're good." she looked over at where their fathers were fighting. "you need to get out of here. all three of you."

before hazel could reply, a towering structure of pipework collapsed, sending sparks flying through the air. tony, bucky, hazel, and dakota were thrown around as metal shards fell around them. "this isn't how i imagined 'sparks fly' by taylor swift." dakota mumbled, pulling her leg out from under the metal piece that had fallen onto it.

"get out of here!" steve said to bucky and hazel. bucky bolted, so tony fired at him, and missed, almost hitting dakota instead. bucky led the way to a control panel, where he pressed at an assortment of buttons. a door opened overhead, and he and hazel looked up at it. "it wasn't him, tony." steve insisted. "hydra had control of his mind!"

bucky began climbing up the platforms to the exit, and tony began to chase after him. when he reached bucky, he kicked him, aiming to shoot him. dakota flew over to her father, pushing him to the side. "this won't fix anything." she told her father, who practically growled as bucky escaped from under him.

"he's not going to stop." steve said to bucky, lifting his head as a gesture to the open entrance. "go."

hazel was about to follow bucky to the exit, but stopped to look back at the fight happening below her. she watched as tony soared upwards. steve leapt towards him, shooting a wire that wrapped around her father's neck. dakota flew up to where hazel was, watching the fight. she knew they were going to kill each other if she didn't do something.

her father had somehow managed to grab bucky again. "do you even remember them?" tony asked bucky as he held him in a headlock.

bucky looked regretful, his jaw locked with emotion. "i remember all of them." bucky pushed himself away from tony, landing harshly on a platform below. steve grabbed tony, and the two fell onto their backs on the concrete floor that dakota and hazel stood on. snow drifted in from the openings in the wall, getting caught in their hair and their suits.

"this isn't gonna change what happened." steve told tony. both men were staring each other down, and hadn't seemed to notice the girls that stood just to the side of them.

"i don't care." tony replied. "he killed my mom."

steve and tony traded punches as dakota moved between them.  "you've both gotta stop." she said, looking at her father before turning to look at steve over her shoulder. her helmet retracted, and the cold immediately hit her face. "have you ever thought that this could be what zemo wants? what he said, before showing the surveillance footage, when he sounded like a fuckin philosopher."

kodie thought for a moment, remembering what he said. "he said, 'an empire toppled by its enemies can rise again, but one crumpled from within is dead forever.'" dakota looked into tony's eyes. "if an enemy tears apart the avengers, they'll rise again, but if they're torn apart by you two cat-fighting," she glanced between her father and steve, "they'll be dead forever."

hazel saw understanding in steve's eyes, and continued on. "if he's trying to get you two to kill each other, then he's nearly succeeded. you both need to stop. i understand what you're both fighting for, but it's not worth any more lives than have already been lost. both in vienna, and your parents." she looked over at tony. "but we're not moving until you stop fighting each other."

the two daughters were standing back to back, each looking into their fathers' eyes. if they wanted to fight each other, they'd have to get through them.

steve looked over the girls' heads and into tony's eyes. "he's my friend." he said to tony, in regards to bucky.

"so was i." tony mumbled. he didn't move to fight, though, staying where he was. dakota turned, her eyes meeting hazel's. they smiled a little at each other before hazel followed steve and bucky out the door, leaving the two starks standing in the cold.
