"No, I don't miss that," I chuckle amused. "I wouldn't change the Hardcores for anything in the world, I adore you all and my life is way more interesting now but I still like opera and music was really good..."
"Regnava nel silenzio, alta la notte e bruna... Colpìa la fonte un pallido raggio di tetra luna... Quando sommesso un gemito fra l'aure udir si fe', Ed ecco su quel margine... L'ombra mostrarsi a me!"
"Fuck, Ruby! That's from Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti..." I can't help looking at her with my mouth wide open while she smiles smugly, her powerful voice still echoes through the room, the notes were perfect, the timbre of her vocal cords, the dramatic coloratura... Flawless... I've never heard something like that in all my years as a journalist. "Babe, that was amazing..."
Suddenly, her father starts grumbling and grunting, twisting on his chair and reminding me that we're visiting his retirement home, I can't understand him but it's pretty clear he's insulting his daughter... Bastard, he almost ruined her life and still thinks he can criticize her. I clench my jaw angrily for a second before leaning towards my girl, grabbing the lapel of her gorgeous leather jacket and melding my lips with hers. I was trying to provoke her a little but Ruby's response is enthusiastic and the kiss turns hot, needy, she puts her arms around my waist and drags me from the chair to her lap, her tongue reaches deeper... Till the sound of a bell somewhere near brings us back to reality and we pull away breathing heavily.
"Damn it, baby girl, I'll sing opera for you more often if you promise me you'll pay me with kisses like this one..." A mischievous smirk spreads across her face while she winks at me and I nod dazzled, getting up awkwardly and fixing my clothes. "Let's go back home... Goodbye, dad, try not to die before I can get married to this stunning lady... I can't wait to show you the wedding pictures... It'll be great..."
The old man writhes on his chair, spitting and mumbling, his evil eyes follow all our movements till we leave the room and I can't help feeling a shudder running down my spine: if that man could walk, I don't doubt for a second he'd try to kill his daughter. I remain silent while Ruby says goodbye to the staff and the retirement home manager, her car is waiting for us outside and I sit down absentmindedly, I wish Peter the Moron were dead definitely so my girl could get rid of his unhealthy influence... It's true that she enjoys showing off her success in front of him but that has to stop, that man doesn't deserve a single second of her time and attention. He ruined her childhood and teen years but I won't let him ruin the peace she's managed to find as an adult, now that I know the face of Ruby' monster I'll do everything possible to kick him out of her head. I blink startled when I notice that the singer has stopped the car on the curve of a road, protected by some trees, it's getting dark but there're beautiful views of the canyon from here and LA City is turning the lights on in the distance.
"I'm sorry, we shouldn't have visited him, I didn't know it was going to bother you like this." I look at her perplexed and Ruby shrugs. "You've been quiet for 15 minutes..."
"I hate him, I hate him so much, babe... I wish he were dead, I don't want to see him again, I don't want him in our lives..." My eyes are full of tears and the singer stares at me shocked. "I'm sorry," I whisper shaking my head and taking a deep breath. "I know he's your father but I don't like him, his bad energy makes me feel sick..."
"Yes, that's his best talent right now: making people feel disgusted... He used to play violin long time ago and was really good at it, you can't even imagine it... He could've been famous if it weren't for his drinking problem..." Ruby sighs rubbing the wheel of her gorgeous car, a cold breeze coming from the sea makes me shiver and my girl pushes the button to put the top up. "Some therapists told me I could get rid of him if I forgave him, that monsters would disappear if I understood that he was a sick man, that he's an alcoholic that did horrible things because he was poisoned by whisky and deserves our compassion..."
