You felt your throat tighten as you started hyperventilating. You were unable to get enough air out before your breath would catch, this process repeating itself as your entire body fought the panic attack that had resulted from seeing the article about you and Pete.

"Hey, babe, I have every... Y/N, what's wrong?!" Pete emerged from downstairs and ran over to you, a look of pure dread and horror on his face.

"The... there's..." you struggled to get the words out as your breath kept catching. You knew that you wouldn't be able to talk until your breathing was back to normal so you just threw your arms around Pete who was now sitting next to you on the couch.

Pete rubbed your back in an attempt to soothe and comfort you as your tears fell onto the back of his jacket.

"You're safe here, sweetheart," Pete whispered into your ear as you continued your erratic breathing. You tried to take some deep breaths but you kept thinking back to the article title which sent you back into panic.

Pete just held you tight as you continued to cry, not sure what to say since he didn't know the cause of your panic. With his hand on your lower back, Pete moved his thumb up and down which soothed you and allowed you to focus on calming down your breathing.

It took a while, but eventually, you were back to breathing normally, tears still falling down your face as you leaned back and looked at Pete.

Pete didn't say anything as to not pressure you into sharing what was bothering you. He just kept his arms wrapped around you, his fingers rubbing soothing circles on your lower back.

"Have you been on your phone today?" you managed to get out.

"No," Pete said, a look of concern crossing his face.

You unlocked your phone and handed it to Pete who stared at the screen. You couldn't read the look that formed on his face. Sadness? Anger? Regret? Shock? All of the above?

"Fuck, Y/N, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault," Pete said as he handed your phone back, not even bothering to read the article after seeing the horrific title.

"No, it's not, Pete. We knew this would happen eventually."

"I was supposed to protect you from all of this shit and I failed. Your full name is right next to mine on the internet."

"Pete, I don't need protection. I signed up for this when I started dating you. I knew that there would be consequences and even if I could go back and change things, I wouldn't. I love what we have."

You grabbed both of Pete's hands and held them in your own, the two of you sitting on the couch in silence as you processed what was happening and what this meant for your relationship.

"I wouldn't change anything either. You're the best thing to ever happen to me, Y/N."

You felt butterflies in your stomach at Pete's words and you leaned in to kiss him, the two of you keeping your foreheads pressed together afterward.
