You go to George Matthew's room and tell him the good news about his surgery!
"Hey buddy, guess what?! You were so brave and you managed to help us win the fight! You're all better George! You'll be running around in no time! Thank you for helping us fight George, we couldn't have done it without you!" You rejoice.
George giggles happily as his parents embrace him. You see Arizona hovering outside the door smiling. You receive a warm hug from George's mother and you politely excuse yourself.
Arizona takes your arm, "I just wanted to congratulate you fully on George's surgery Grace! I'm so impressed with your good judgement skills and quick thinking! You've really done us all proud today! Now go and get some rest, I need you for morning rounds tomorrow!"
"Thank you Arizona, it really means a lot! Thank you for trusting me with his case as well! I really found my feet today!" You try to stifle a yawn. Arizona laughs and pushes you towards the locker room.
Meredith and Derek are walking up the corridor with the biggest smiles on their faces! Meredith pulls you in for a hug and Derek puts his arm round you.
"We heard how your first surgery went Grace! You did amazing, we are both so proud of you!" Meredith squeals with excitement.
"Thanks Mom!" You exclaim. "I'm just going to get changed, then I'll grab Zola from day-care and take her home." You yawn again and go into the locker room.
You shut the door and notice that Jackson is shirtless, looking like he's just gotten out of the shower. "Uh sorry Jackson, I'll get changed elsewhere!" You divert your eyes and go to the toilets to get changed.
You walk into the day-care centre and can see Zola curled up in the corner on a cushion reading one of your dad's medical journals. "Come on Zozo, let's go home!" You encouraged. She smiles up and you and grabs your hand. You get into a taxi and head back home. You get in the door and collapse on the couch out of sheer exhaustion.
"Do you want to go and get ready for bed Zola? I'll bring up some milk and cookies for your story." You asked.
"Okay Grace, don't fall asleep, I want you to read my story today!" Zola exclaims.
You are still pumped from your afternoon surgery, and are so happy that you found your feet, but also that you were successful in your surgery assist. You didn't want to let Arizona down, especially as she always tells you how much potential you have, you didn't let the pressure get to you, you excelled in that surgery!
You unwillingly haul yourself off the couch and prepare Zola's milk and cookies, you wonder what story she wants to be read to her tonight. As you climb up the stairs you notice an old photo of you and Derek that has been framed on the wall. It's of you in your dad's scrub cap and your Mom's scrubs. Your heart warms at the sight of it, where your dream of becoming a surgeon began. No matter what has happened to you over the past year, nothing could ever deter you from your dreams. You're suddenly brought back to the real world when you hear Zola calling for you. You go into her cosy bedroom and perch on her bed.
"So, are you a real surgeon now Grace? Like Mom and Dad?" She questions.
You laugh, "Yes Zozo! Which means I can tell you stories about the hospital just like Mom and Dad do! Now snuggle down and I'll tell you about my day." You chuckled.
You go back to your room and try and get some sleep, all of the events that have happened to you in the last year seem to finally surface, after months of suppressing your true feelings.
The past year - what has happened to Grace
You and Mark Sloan were together. You only did this to make your Dad angry because you two weren't getting on. Things between you and Mark were never serious. One night you were up late doing sutures on one of Mark's expensive models. His best friend Jack was staying over for the night. He quietly hovered over you to see what you were doing, he tapped your shoulder, which made you jump and snag some of the model's material. Jack laughs and starts joking around at how angry Mark will be.
