We rowed down Glasswater river in the boat the Telmarine soldiers had used. Lucy and Susan sat at the bow with Trumpkin and I sat with Edmund at the back while Peter rowed the boat.

"They're so still," Lucy noticed, looking up at the trees.

"They're trees, what do you expect?" Trumpkin asked.

"Layla used to dance with them," she replied.

"It wasn't long after you left that the Telmarines invaded. Those who survived retreated into the woods," Trumpkin explained. "And the trees, they retreated so deeply inside themselves that no one has heard of them since. Not even the Guardian would be able get them to wake."

"You'd be surprised," Lucy pointed.

"I don't understand. How could Aslan have let this happen?" I asked, devastated.

"Aslan?" Trumpkin snorted. "I thought he abandoned us after you lot did."

"We didn't mean to leave, you know," Peter spoke up.

"Doesn't make much difference now, does it?" Trumpkin replied.

"Get us to the Narnians and it will," Peter assured. The tone in his voice made me itch.

I looked at Edmund questioningly but he still didn't say anything. I looked back out over the water. He knew something that he wasn't telling me and I'll fish it out of him eventually.

We finally arrived at the shore of the main island and we all climbed out. Lucy wandered up the rocky beach and noticed a bear. I didn't do anything as bears were usually Narnian so I helped the others dock the boat.

Suddenly, we heard a growl.

"Don't move, your majesty!" Trumpkin instructed.

I looked at Lucy just in time to see the bear charge at her.

"Lucy!" I cried, drawing my bow.

Susan knocked an arrow in her bow and took aim. "Stay away from her!" She demanded.

"Susan, Layla, shoot!" Edmund yelled as the boys ran up to us, their swords in hand.

Lucy screamed and ran towards us. Then she fell and bear got closer. I couldn't bear waiting any longer and fired. The bear fell over and dead as Lucy turned to see who shot.

Susan looked at me as I ran up to Lucy with the boys and Trumpkin following.

"Why wouldn't he stop?" Susan asked.

"I suspect he was hungry," Trumpkin explained walking up to the bear.

"He's wild," Edmund pointed out.

"I don't think he could talk at all," Peter noted, gripping Lucy.

"He wasn't a Narnian," I gasped.

"Get treated like a dumb animal long enough, that's what you become," Trumpkin preceded to slit the bear's throat.

Lucy buried her face in Peter's shirt.

"You may find Narnia a more savage place than you remember," Trumpkin advised.

I gulped, Narnia really did change while we were gone and we weren't here to prevent it. Oh how I hoped Glimmer had stayed alive.
