Chapter Seventeen - A Storm Brews
"A stormy sea is always scarier alone."
~
The next day Abby walked to school alone, -Kayla didn't come by that morning to pick her up like usual.
She found herself thinking, She must've walked with someone else today, as she crossed the street, picking up her pace to avoid an oncoming car. Come to think of it, her thoughts continued, she's been able to fit in at school a lot easier than I have. It was true.
Kayla was anxious, just like her, Aby had always thought they were pretty similar.
Until something came along and reminded her how different they really were.
While Kayla had little to no trouble meandering her way into their classmate's lives, Abby was rather distant and closed off. If she had to choose a way to describe them, she'd have to say that Kayla was the sun, and she was the moon.
Overthinking seemed to be Abby's downfall. It became apparent by the added weight upon her shoulders as her thoughts ran rampant.
With a heavy heart, she continued on her way to school.
When she got to the gates, she nearly turned around and left. The crowd of reporters pounced on another student, and she could only watch in sympathy. There were a lot more than she first thought there was.
Too many.
She's just about to turn and wait it out, but one catches sight of her and she's whisked into the middle of the fray. Microphones are shoved in her face, cameras are flashing, and there are too many voices talking all at once.
They're all too loud. It's too much. She can't escape.
A wave of emotions crashes into her, and she feels like she'd about to be swept into the depths of an ocean. Her lungs seize as she tries to speak, nothing comes out. She tries to turn but it feels like she's thrashing against a current that won't let her go. Everywhere she turns, there's a person in her way.
Someone shoves a microphone in her face, and she barely has time to turn before another one takes its place. The voices grow distant. The only sound she can hear is the blood rushing past her ears. Her head begins to grow heavy as her body feels like it's going to shut down.
She almost believes she's drowning.
I can't breathe. She thinks. It's the only distinct thought so far. She staggers back.
I can't breathe. Her head spins.
I can't breathe.
~
Kayla groaned as Mina laughed. They'd been talking about the reporters a the gates when Kamiinari brought up how Kayla wheezed in front of them all. Sero joined the laughter as he leaned against a desk.
"Wait, you actually wheezed on camera?"
"Yes!" She shrieks, "God, I'm done for! My hero career is over before it even begins!" She wails before letting her head fall onto her desk.
