Chapter Twenty-Four - Sports Festival, Start!
"Time to show the world what we're made of,"
"Or, at least, Japan."
_
The time they had to train for the sports festival went by quickly. The air buzzed with quiet nerves and people shared hushed whispers of anxiety.
Furtive glances were sent between students of each class and course, each filled with jitters of thoughts about doing well.
Class 1-A was no different, but a different kind of tension hangs heavy in the air.
Abby tries not to curl too much into a ball on her chair, but the rising tension between her classmates was starting to become too much. Her stomach was already fluttering with anxiety- she didn't need the declaration of war Todoroki brought on with Midoriya.
Kayla wasn't much different, but she had an easier time pushing it away and distracting herself by chit-chatting with Mina, Hagakure, and Kirishima. They were nervous too.
When it was announced for class 1-A to leave for the field, everyone lined up with Iida's instructions and marched out. There are other classes being called by the time they step foot into the field, so the attention wasn't just on them.
Abby practically hides behind Ojiro, who can only offer her a small smile. She would've hidden behind Shoji, but Iida put him in between Todoroki and Midoriya.
Once the last class is in their formation, Midnight begins to speak on the stage. She calls for Bakugo to say some words before the festival truly starts.
Kayla and Abby share a small grimace with each other, knowing what was about to come.
So, as Bakugo gave his speech if one could call it that, Abby groans and pushes her face into her hands. "Why is he like this?" She whispers.
Ojiro gently pats her back. "We don't know."
Everyone shifts to one of the tunnels for their first activity- the obstacle course race.
_
As the shot signaling the start of the race sounds off, multiple students yell as their feet are encased in ice.
Kayla is quick to strike her hands and melt the ice, doing a back handspring through two students and out the end of the tunnel. She grins as she races after the dual-haired boy. "Think you can get rid of me that easily?!"
She shoots into the air and manoeuvers around the robots and propels herself just past Bakugo. "Too slow!" She laughs, dodging the fist aimed at her.
After getting past the robots, she lets herself descend back to solid ground to run. If she wants to get ahead, she'll need to save her firepower for later on in the race. I'm in it to win it!
Abby is a little behind. With her mind overworking with her added anxiety about everything going on, she's struggling to find a single coherent thought. All she knows is that if she doesn't get it together soon, she won't pass this first round.
And she doesn't want to disappoint any of the people who have helped her get this far.
Then she reaches the next obstacle- The Fall.
