Chapter Twenty-Three - Pushed to the Limit
"Sometimes I wonder if I'm really cut out for this..."
~~
Hizashi glances down the hallway with a furrow on his brow. Usually, when he got home Kayla was always around, or would at least send him a message if she went out.
But he had got no message, and the house was quiet.
His thoughts went back to how hard she'd been training lately. Maybe she was resting, or sleeping? Worry pooled in the pit of his stomach, but he pushed it down. He was probably overthinking.
But even as he went on to do his own thing, his thoughts kept drifting back to how Kayla was doing.
_
Anyone who knew Kayla knew she was usually pretty upbeat and unafraid to be herself. She took the initiative when it came to asking people if they wanted to hang out, or usually came up with something to do when she was with someone.
So anyone could tell there was something wrong when she was quiet. It was almost unnerving, in a way.
She tries for a smile when she meets Mic's eyes, who came to check on her in her room. It only takes one soft look of understanding from him to break her. Hot tears spilled down her cheeks as he wraps his arms around her.
"Sometimes I wonder if I'm really cut out for this,"
His heart clenches at her watery words, and he only holds her tighter.
"It's ok, little listener," he says quietly, "It's ok."
Kayla clutches onto the fabric of his shirt and sobs into his shoulder, trying to curl into a ball. She blubbers and words pour from her mouth as she cries, everything muddling together and becoming too diluted for him to understand.
But he continues to hug her, helping her breathe and let it all out. He knew something was wrong. He'd known since the USJ incident.
He just didn't realize how much it affected everyone. Hell, he'd even seen Aizawa peeking his eyes open from his sleeping bag to check on his students during classes he wasn't even teaching.
Mic spends the rest of the day with Kayla, doing things that took her mind off of heroes and villains. They cook dinner together and watch Disney movies on the couch, under a blanket fort Mic suggested they make.
By the end of the day, Kayla is better. She may not be herself completely yet, but she's healing.
And that's all he wanted.
_
Mina grins as she bounces over to Kayla, "Wow! That new move was so cool!"
Kayla mirrors the grin and wipes some sweat from her brow. "You think so? I've been trying to practice some stuff from movies! I didn't think I'd ever have to do research from watching a movie!" She laughs.
It's been a few days since her breakdown with Mic, and she was starting to feel more refreshed and motivated. Maybe crying and actually talking about what was wrong was helpful. They came up with a system that helped her open up more.
Mic put a whiteboard on her door and a whole plethora of different colored expo markers. Each color represented an emotion and she could put more than one color down. If she wanted him to talk with her, she could write that down, or if she wanted the opposite, she could do that too.
It became easier to communicate with him.
Mina suggests they take a break and go get some food or something. She suggests meeting with some others, which Kayla happily obliges to.
When they get to the mall, after temporarily separating to shower and dress in casual clothes, they meet up with a few others.
Kirishima grins as he greets them happily. Denki, Jiro, and Hagakure each send their own greetings before Mina drags them all to a new food place she's been dying to try.
Kayla smiles and laughs as she runs along with her, sunlight shining brightly and casting a warm glow over everything. She appreciates this moment.
And she thinks that maybe, no matter what happens, things will be ok.

My brain is fried and I'm slowly trying to get back into writing for this story! Fear not! I feel that once the sports festival arc is written, everything will go a bit smoother!
Hopefully, this is enough to suffice for a few days, and thank you all for reading! I can't wait to see you in the next chapter!
