Chapter Two - A Game of Questions

"Dammit Abi, come back."

~

After coaxing the officers to let her out of the interrogation room, Kayla wandered through the police station. No one spared her a second glance.

You'd think they'd be more alert as police officers.

"Excuse me, miss?"

Kayla turned to the voice and tilted her head.

Well, I wasn't expecting to meet him so soon.

"Yeah?" She asked.

"I'm Detective Tsukauchi, would you mind coming with me?" He asked while offering a small, friendly smile.

She shrugged as she turned to him. "Sure, where are we going?"

Instead of answering, he gestured for her to follow him. They walked to a separate room but it wasn't an interrogation room this time.

The room was an office, at least from what Kayla could tell. There were a few windows, a desk with a lot of papers, some filing cabinets, and a few other things.

Tsukauchi gestured to the empty chairs on the other side of the desk. "Take a seat, I'll be just a minute." He left the room as Kayla sat down.

I wonder if Abi's here too since she was watching with me. I don't want to be here alone.

The door opened and Tsukauchi walked in with some papers in his hands. Once he sat down and cleared off some of the clutter, he set the papers down and looked at Kayla. "I understand you were almost mugged earlier today?"

"Yep,"

"You also stated you came here on a flight from," he searched through the papers, "America?" He turned his attention back to Kayla. "Is that correct?"

Kayla nodded as a response.

"Did you have a friend with you? Or were you meeting a friend somewhere?"

"I had no one with me, but I was waiting for a friend at the airport. She was supposed to be the next flight in."

Tsukauchi hummed and looked through the papers before asking another question. "Could you tell me the name of this friend?"

"Abi," she said.

She noticed as he stopped and looked up for a moment, his brows furrowed and his lips shaping an 'o'.

"Does Abi have red hair and freckles?"

Hope bubbled in Kayla's chest as she beamed. "Yeah, that's her!"

His eyebrows furrowed again as he set a hand on his chin. Wasn't she lying?

Kayla noticed his perplexed expression and tilted her head. What was going through his mind? "Is she here by any chance?"

"She was earlier, but she left without anyone noticing. We searched for a while, but it was like she disappeared."

"Oh."

Silence consumed the room as the two thought to themselves.

Where would Abi go? She doesn't know where anything is, but maybe she went to a place in the anime?

"Do you know where she might have gone?"

"She might have gone somewhere she thought I'd be. Maybe the mall?"

"Anywhere else that we should check?"

"Hmm. She might be at the beach, but the mall seems more likely."

Tsukauchi scribbled the two locations on a notepad before nodding. "I'll send search teams to those locations,"

"Dammit Abi, come back."

Kayla sat in the office for a while as Tsukauchi talked on the phone.

After finishing on the phone, Tsukauchi stood up and grabbed his coat before putting it on. "Well, let's go see if we can find her at the mall. I've got a search team en route, but maybe you could help us more."

"Sounds good to me, I just hope she doesn't get into trouble."

"Why would you say that?"

"She's kind of talented that way."
